  • Lutz and Haertl on the morning sports radio show. I caught a portion of Lutz arguing with a caller about the play. Lutz was very emphatic that WSU would be complaining about stealing third if the roles were reversed.

    • I challenge Bob to produce a situation near what happened Saturday in past WSU history and show where Gene reacted likewise.

I shall await a response. I know they are paying attention.

If he cannot, then the comment is irresponsible.

      • Does Bob ever say anything responsible?

I can't wait til Thursday night!

        ... No really, deuces.

        • With regard to the steal, there was plenty of moaning when FSU stole 2nd in the 9th inning of a 10-4 game on June 10, 2008. So the shoe has been on the other foot, and it wasn't worn well. Having said that, I was fine with it then, and fine with it now. Our fan base hasn't been too consistent with this, but most fan bases are the same....they hate losing. CU has probably stole plenty of bases this year in the same spot, they just don't like it happening to them, and likewise for us when it has worked against us.

          • i guess THAT'S my point....i had no problem with it the other day, and if the situation's reversed, no problem then, either...but i think we have short memories in life.

I don't even remember that play, probably because it didn't bother me too much, but I could understand the 'moaning' a bit more in that situation because there wasn't a run-rule involved.

              • No run rule, just a trip to the CWS. I'd have run the score up as far as I could in that instance. Gene was plenty upset, as was the CU coach a couple of days ago. Bottom line, losing is a meal best served to someone else.

                • wow...and people continue to still not understand. At this point it's pointless to try and explain it to them if their skulls are that thick and empty.

                  • Quoth shockball, wisely:

"Gene said on his show tonight that he was pleased with the play. I don't think too many Shocker fans would be moaning if the shoe was on the other foot. Although Lutz said on the radio this morning that our coaching staff would be upset with CU if the roles were reversed. Bob has always known more about baseball than Gene."

                    Yes, Bob and Molly both...

If Gene was pleased, he was right, because any given play can potentially mess up your season, and the fewer plays you can use to win a game the better. For example, I can remember Jeff Ryan suffering an essentially season-ending hand injury trying to pull an ultimately meaningless home run back from over the fence late in an ultimately meaningless game against -- gee, Creighton, of all teams -- an injury that seriously weakened an outstanding WSU team in the late 90s and may well have contributed to a missed regional victory and much more. If that game had ended one inning earlier...

If Servais seriously believes his rhetoric (as opposed to just trying to fire up a collapsing team), he's an idiot. And judging from the collective personality of his bunch of whiners, he may very well be. He can only gain from the situation -- 1 1/3 fewer innings of pitching by his guys and some rah-rah material, so he ought to be thanking WSU, not bitching and moaning.

And, of course, what does anyone need to say about the buffoon Lutz that hasn't already been said? He's just stirring the pot, trying to in vain to sell newspapers and save a job for himself. Anyone who takes Lutz seriously does so at his own risk.

                    • How would Lutz ever know about a reaction like that since we have never been run ruled?

Not calling you out, Ashockalypse, but your comment got me wondering ... and yes indeed the Shox have (or course) been run-ruled - but the can of whoopass has been opened on the opponents much more frequently. The '04 team run-ruled every MVC team except Evansville at least once.

From the on-line records that go back to the 2001 season, the Shox have lost by 10 or more runs in < 9 innings exactly 3 times. On the other hand, the Shox have won by 10 or more in < 9 innings a whopping 34 times by my count. The data follows, don't crucify me if I missed some or there were other circumstances that shortened the games.

Do you mean Creighton run ruled us and won 16-0? Why didn't they quit scoring when it was 9-0? I thought only 2% of people would ever keep trying to score when you are ahead by 9 runs?
