Wichitans may get an opportunity to see former Shocker Jordan Cooper against the Wingnuts this season. He signed an independent contract with the T-Bones. He started the season with AAA in the Cleveland organization.

If any Shocker baseball fan wants to be driven absolutely crazy, take a peek at John Hayes's stats so far in A ball this summer.

            Connecticut Tigers stats

I don't want to diminish the accomplishments of a former Shocker, but some perspective is in order. Short-season A ball is one level above rookie, and is where a good number of newly drafted college players (other than those picked in the early rounds) start out. If he were doing that in full-season A ball, it would be impressive. His K/IP (13/21.1) and K/BB (13/7) rates are mediocre. There are eight pitchers on his team with better ERAs (having between 3.0 and 23.2 IP - four of them have 10+ IP).

He teammate, Joe Navilhon (USC, 21st round pick, same age as John), has a 0.38 ERA in 23.2 IP, 26 K, 5 BB.

All of that said, it's certainly not a bad start and something to build on. Perhaps with some maturity, new coaches and perspectives he'll put it together.

Hayes's numbers ended up being roughly equivalent to Kyle Funkhouser's (though in less innings since Funk is a starter). Funkhouser was an All-American at Louisville and a first round draft pick.

Mystifying fact: On Saturday, weather permitting, Alec Bohm will play his 50th minor league game vs the Delmarva Shorebirds in Low A ball. Through 48 games he has yet to hit a single home run in 167 ABs. He and Vickers (who has many fewer ABs) are the last remaining pro Shockers without a dinger. You never know.

But it was also the tragic consequence of the informational malnourishment so badly afflicting the nation. ... Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'

                    That is quite mystifying.

Addendum: Bohm got his dinger on Sunday. Game 51. Two-run shot. Raised his average to .310 on the year.

Looks like we got him going. 3 homers now, and a promotion.

Lost in the activity over the Butler firing was the news that Josh Smith got promoted to the Indians. He is, I believe, the 38th Shocker Major Leaguer and the first to debut since Dusty Coleman in 2015.

Bohm gets his second promotion -- to Double-A Reading -- after a scorching .342 BA with 7 homers in 62 games at lower levels this year.

                          From the Philly Inquirer article:

"Bohm could be in the conversation to spend September in the majors, joining the Phillies just in time for a possible playoff race."

"It can be expected that Bohm will be the Phillies’ starting third baseman in 2020. Perhaps they will push the clock ahead a few months."
