  • every year seems to be a broken record, we go 40-0 against nobody, and 6-9 against quality opponents, everybody on here gets all pumped up about being 46-9, and then just can't fathom how we don't make the cws.

Here is the cold hard facts: we are a good solid program that plays a weak conference and is around .500 against good teams, what that means is that we are among the 40 best teams in the country year in and year out, but rarely among the best 8, the nature of our conference and schedule tends to make us overated in the polls. My point is this, let's be thankful that we have a good program to support, and not fall prey to being dissapointed every year merely because we overate ourselves, A signal that we are having a special year will be when we go 9-3 or thereabouts against regional quality opponents.

      • We do have a padded schedule, our team record and batting average reflects this.

Games in which we have played good to great competition - LBSU, Nebraska, WSU, ORU, KU, KSU, TCU, MO State and Creighton - this team is batting a paltry .236. Freakin' .236! That folks won't win you many ball games especially when it comes down to tourney ball. We are 11-6 against these teams combined. And I'll use the term 'good' loosely for KU, KSU, and MO State by the way.

We got owned by a guy who has an ERA over 5 and you gotta love the bats on the shoulders admiring the pitch go into the catchers glove in the 9th. Way to not want to make an out, or the last out for that matter.

On the other hand, TK is looking good, I like how he fought back from that horrible first inning.

I think this team is better than most we have had in recent years. If our hitting gets back on track (in a little slump now), I like our chances in the post season given the starting pitching talent we have in the top 3 or even 4.

We have not played well against top 10 teams, but keep in mind the LBSU series was very early and we were without Capra. The 1st game was an extra inning loss and we led a couple times in the second game but just couldn't hold the lead. We are not there yet, but could be very good by the end of the season!

KC - I would agree with you if we were actually hitting .236 against those teams. I don't have the #'s for tonights game, but we are hitting .282 against the rest of those teams you listed. That is a HUGE difference. Still not where we need to be, but much better than .236.

            • Last year we happened to get Long Beach State and Nebraska at home. Took 2 of 3 from the Dirtbags and beat the Huskers. Maybe playing really good teams on the road is kind of difficult.

I remember people on here last year were saying the same thing after we were ranked #8 in the country and we dropped 3 in a row. What people don't understand is that the 1st loss was at Bradley, which was on Sunday after we took the 1st 2. The 2nd was at Oral Roberts and the 3rd was to Creighton at home on Friday; we turned around to win the last 2 of that series.

Keep saying we don't have a chance to host a regional. Keep saying this team can't beat anybody. That is exactly what was going on last year.

Everyone except for some "Wichita State fans" on here think we have a great team this year and have a fantastic chance to host a regional

I rechecked my figures by looking at the box scores to each game. I omitted the MO State series in my initial calculations. Adding the numbers from this MSU series, the Shox have 162 hits in 615 at bats = .263. If you do take out the MO State series where we feasted on their horrible relief pitching and batted .387 against them, we are hitting .236 against the other teams mentioned.

                  • One of us is missing something because I have 158 in 561 AB's prior to Nebraska. I am not saying your wrong, and again I didn't include tonight's game, but using your #'s would mean we have hit .380 against everyone not in your list. That SOUNDS a little out of whack.

                      • I think this team could possibly go to the CWS, but they are going to have to play a lot better against quality opposition if it's going to happen. This team has good pitching, good hitting at times (definitely not tonight), good speed, and pretty good defense most of the time. All they need is to put it all together against teams we play in the postseason

                        • i think it's one game.

a few calls didn't go our way. some line outs. a few mental errors.

                          one game.
this could have happened against quite a few teams, not just nebraska. i KNOW we could be them. we just didn't during our (seemingly) one chance of the season.

one game (if you haven't heard yet)

The thing is, by the time we get 'there', it might be too late to host a regional and we'll have to do it the hard way.. winning against good competition away from home.

Sure, it's just one game.. but to our RPI and to all the critics of us out there, this just proved that we crack under the pressure of good, stellar competition.

We were ranked higher than Nebraska. We were the favorites, technically. The fact that our hitters just sat there when they had to chance to prove to everybody that we were legit really is what t'ed me off.

With a performance like that from Kelly tonight, this game should've been ours if we actually decided to try and contact the ball.

Oh.. by the way.. where's Rosewood at? Don't tell me Rose is just sunshine-pumper. That's just about as bad as the posters who only post when the team's down.

I thought of this, but I think the offense will respond in this game, and Kelley will settle down. Well, I hope anyway.
Me too. I'm tired of us underachieving in big games.
You want to wait and see a full game before you judge the performance in the game? Is that too much to ask?
Am I not able to offer my opinion of the game during the game, or do I have to wait until the Almighty Rosewood says it's ok and that's after the game?

It's a legitimate point. Go over the big games the last few years and tell me how many we've won.
I'm just trying to save you face because everyone should know not to judge a game before it is over.

It is about as silly as comparing this year's team to previous years as the makeup is very different.

                              • Tonight I found myself thinking one thing through this game more than anything else... Never should have messed with the lineup when everyone was comfortable. Seems like its stressing guys out at the plate and having different objectives at that different spot has several of them in mini slumps. Maybe not but I cant help but wonder. There were some awful at bats tonight thats for sure. I also can't help but wonder why Gene pulled Sissny after he got a freaking hit and no one else could. Seemed like a bad move to me as I thought Sissny earned his starting spot (because he did start) and he did get a hit after all and was pulling his weight at the plate. I thought Kelley was excellent tonight and really spotted his pitches well and did about all you could ask any starter in the country to do against a top 10 team. Dusty freaking Colemans catch in left was just absurd. In fact all 3 catches that inning were pretty damn good. I think Nebraska is something like 18-1-1 in their last 20 against ranked oppenents at home. This isnt a terrible loss and the box score will show that. Really expected more fight at the plate tonight. The ump was calling that outside edge all night and you just cant stand there and not swing. I got a feeling SIU is in for a bad weekend indeed.
