  • Shockers at Dallas Baptist (3 Game Series)

The Shocks (21-23, 6-6) head to Dallas this weekend to take on the 2nd place Patriots (28-16, 8-4) in a 3 game series.

DBU brings a .294 team batting average to the fray toghether with a .883 OPS with a eye-popping 62 home runs in 44 games. DBU is averaging 7.05 runs per game.

The Shocks who have been hitting somewhat better lately have a .264 team batting average (much better than the .234 they were sporting a few weeks back) with a .732 OPS and relatively anemic (especially in comparison to DBU) 24 home runs in 44 games. The Shocks are averaging 5.5 runs per game.

DBU pitching has a 4.36 team ERA and an OBA of .264. DBU has allowed an average of 5.2 run per game.

Shocker pitching has a 4.78 ERA which has gone south a bit as it had dropped below 4.00 briefly a few weeks back. The Shocks have an OBA of .260 and are giving up 5.4 runs per game.

Likely starters of DBU are Ray Gaither 6-3, 212 Fr RHP (4-3, 4.42 ERA), Jordan Martinson 5-11, 200 So LHP (5-3. 4.50 ERA), and M.D. Johnson 6-6, 185 So RHP (2-2, 3.76 ERA).

I thing we can expect the Shocks to go with Sr. Zach Lewis (3-3, 3.04 ERA) on Friday and Jr. Cody Tyler (4-4, 5.13 ERA on Saturday. Sounds like Sunday's starter might be up in the air at this pont. May very will be a Johnny Wholestaff effort. They will probably stick with Tommy Barnhouse since Keylan Kilgore wasn't sharp against KSU. Could give Connor Lungwitz a start as he has been effective in his last couple of appearnces ableit short outings. My concern with Barnhouse is that he has given up more total home runs and more home runs per 9 innings than anyone else on the Shocker staff. That may not work well against a team hitting has many out as DBU has.

It is just very difficult to have any confidence whatsoever that the Shocks will be able to have much success against DBU. A DBU sweep is certainly a possiblity. If the Shocks could win 2 of 3 they should be doing a happy dance all the way home on the bus.

I feel like this has the look of one of those series where you just get spanked and sent home

Would like to see us win one of the games this weekend. Tough to expect any more than that.

With all the negativity on this forum perhaps we should point out some positives from some of our players.

In Conference Play (12 games) a few guys have stepped up pretty impressively:

Alex Bohm is hitting .462 (24-52) with an OBA of .500 and a SLG% of .788 for an OPS of 1.288. He has 15 RBI in league play.

Trey Vickers is hitting .417 (20-48) with an OBA of .472 and a SLG% of .500 for an OPS of .972, He has 8 RBI in league play.

Greyson Jenista is hitting .383 (18-47) with an OBA of .483 and a SLG% of .660 for an OPS of 1.143. He has 12 RBI in league play.

Jordan Boyer is hitting .297 (11-37) with an OBA of .447 and a SLG% of .514 for an OPS of .961. He has 10 RBI in league play.

Noah Croft (in 9 starts) is hitting .355 (11-31) with an OBA .512 and a SLG% of .710 for an OPS of 1.222. He has 14 RBI in league play.

Believe it or not the Shocks are leading the Valley in batting average at .317 in league play through 12 games largely on the strength of these 5 guys. Missouri State is at .312 in 11 games.

These look like very solid numbers for these 5 guys. Yet the Shocks are at 6-6 in league play. Part of that is the pitching has faltered a bit with a 6.73 ERA (7th) in league play. Part of that is the rest of the team is hitting .237 with an OBA of .338 and an OPS of 0.671, and part of it is poor fundamentals/BBIQ at key points (you can decide why that is).

Not sure Bohm, Jenista, Croft, Vickers and Boye can maintain the pace they are on. It will be difficult. But if the pitching doesn't improve it may not make any difference. Last year was our worst season ever in ERA and we had a 5.73 ERA in conference play. Could be the MSU series is skewing this year's numbers to the high side.

@1972Shocker: Thank you for putting this together and spotlighting the positives. One thing that might be an issue with our pitching is if HCTB is doing the recruiting rather than the pitching coach. I assume he still doing this, or am is my memory faltering?

I'm sure giving up 33 runs in 3 games didn't help our ERA at all but keep in mind Dallas Baptist averages the same number of runs scored per game as MSU so our pitching will have to improve if we want to prevent a repeat of the MSU series.

              Game 1

At the risk of jinxing the Shocks they are off to a very good start in Game 1. 5 runs on 9 hits through 5 at bats and Zach Lewis has been sharp limiting DBU to 2 singles in their 1st five at bats.

After 5 complete the Shocks lead 5-0.

With 2 out in the top of the 8th Travis Young walks, steals second and scores on Jordan Boyer's single up the middle his 26th 2-out RBI of the season increasing
                the Shocks lead to 6-0.

Zach Lewis has completed 7 scoreless innings allowing only 2 singles (one and infield hit) and 2 walks. He is at 96 on his pitch count and Codi Heuer is on to pitch the bottom of the 8th.

Just outstanding work by Zach tonight especially given he potency of this DBU team at the plate.

In the DBU 8th Heuer gives up back-to-back singles to open the inning putting runners on the corners with not outs.

Codi Heuer out, Chandler Sanburn in.

Sanburn wild pitches a run home and moves the runner on 1st over to 2nd to take away the double play. Now the double play is back on as Sanburn issues a 4-pitch walk.

Jenista misplays a slow ground ball into an infield single to load the bases.

Looks like the old Shockers have shown up.

A fly ball to shallow right gets the 1st out of the inning with no advance of the runners. Bases loaded with 1 out.

                  Sanburn out, Reagan Biechler in.

If WSU wins this game they will have more wins than last year. Butler off the hot seat?

Biechler walks in the 2nd DBU run and brings the tying run to the plate. Still bases loaded and 1 out.

Biechler wild pitches a run home and takes away the double play.

Biechler then serves up a three run home run and DBU ties the game at 6-6. Absolutely pathetic.

At this point I don't have a lot of hope that the Shocks will win this game.

Gotta pay this clown whether he is coaching or not so firing him wont cost another dime.

Now paying the new coach will add cost but maybe structure a deal where new coach gets a lower salary for first 3 years then a big bump the 4th when Butlers salary is gone?

Biechler hits a batter and then wild pitches him into scoring position with 1 out.

Biechler gets a strike out for out #2 but now the top of the order is up.

Biechler strikes out Hannah to end the nightmare 8th with the Shocks still tied.

Jenista, Bohm and Schwanke due up in the 9th for the Shocks.
