The hire, for sure. If WSU would have hired a baseball coach that had even half a clue to replace Gene, then I think people would have handled Gene's firing better. As it stands, we're stuck with a coach that has a very sub-par record (probably under .500 by now) and was the hitting coach at Arkansas when they finished last or next to last in offense. The hire was absolutely terrible.

Harpenau, the Tech pitcher who loaded the bases in the 7th and gave up the 4 runs in the 8th is far from the best Tech has to offer.
The guys who will be starting Games 2 and 3 for Tech don't appear to be chopped liver. Steven Ginger has an ERA of 1.23 and an opponents BA of .154 and Ryan Shetter has an ERA of 3.29 and a .216 opponents batting average.Last edited by 1972Shocker; March 25, 2017, 09:16 AM.

The hire.
Gene was making a top ~10 salary at the time of his exit and hadn't produced an at-large team in any of his last 5 seasons, coupled with many off-field embarrassments. Rehashing all of that seems silly but a lot of people either forget about it or crave revisiting the discussion.
Terrible, terrible hire.

I remember when we would be excited to play a nationally ranked program at home so that it would move us up in the rankings and RPI when we beat them . . . give us a better shot at hosting a regional.
That did happen, right? I didn't just dream it, did I?
