So which was worse: the fire or the hire? Can't cop out and say both

The hire, for sure. If WSU would have hired a baseball coach that had even half a clue to replace Gene, then I think people would have handled Gene's firing better. As it stands, we're stuck with a coach that has a very sub-par record (probably under .500 by now) and was the hitting coach at Arkansas when they finished last or next to last in offense. The hire was absolutely terrible.

Go figure, the offense shows up, somewhat, the pitching doesn't

No way. This game was 10-0 till WSU scored some runs late. They've shown they can put up a few when the game is unofficially over and they find the bottom of the other teams bullpen.

The hire compounded by a really, really bad contract. I guess it is easy to frivolously throw around big money when it is other people's money you are risking/wasting.

If only we had evidence as to the expected performance level of Butler as a HC before hiring him, maybe the decision would have been different.

              Oh, wait...

Anyways... I feel bad for Steele. No idea why that guy made that move.

My thoughts as well. Looked like Tech threw out two of their least used pitchers to finish the game out so they could preserve their better pitching for today and tomorrow. The game was kind of reflection of the season. Not sure scoring those late runs will have any carryover value against Tech's front line pitching. I suppose it might, but I would be surprised if it does.

Harpenau, the Tech pitcher who loaded the bases in the 7th and gave up the 4 runs in the 8th is far from the best Tech has to offer.

The guys who will be starting Games 2 and 3 for Tech don't appear to be chopped liver. Steven Ginger has an ERA of 1.23 and an opponents BA of .154 and Ryan Shetter has an ERA of 3.29 and a .216 opponents batting average.

                  The hire.

Gene was making a top ~10 salary at the time of his exit and hadn't produced an at-large team in any of his last 5 seasons, coupled with many off-field embarrassments. Rehashing all of that seems silly but a lot of people either forget about it or crave revisiting the discussion.

                  Terrible, terrible hire.

The problem with the hire is WSU had to settle for it second, third or forth choice. The number 1 (DBU) cancelled his visit after his school quickly responded with new contract.

Time to mend things with Gene, fire Butler, and get a guy who can coach.

I remember when we would be excited to play a nationally ranked program at home so that it would move us up in the rankings and RPI when we beat them . . . give us a better shot at hosting a regional.

That did happen, right? I didn't just dream it, did I?

Is that even a realistic possibility?

If Brent leaves and Hooper or Standiford are hired it would definitely be possible. Otherwise, probably not.

Did anyone hear why Schwanke was used in relief last night rather than starting?

He hasn't been good starting. My guess.
