2016 Summer Baseball

Found one of our two JUCO recruits on a Jayhawk League roster. Still looking for Adam Keller.

Amazing to me we have so many players playing in leagues I've never heard of. I know about the Cape Cod and the Northwoods league. I just considered those leagues to be the cream of the crop when it comes to choosing college players. Not knocking any of our guys, but I can't honestly say our guys need to be there. And some of these other leagues? Florida Collegiate, New England, Coastal Plains? How do they rate? Maybe I'm just selfish in that I want our guys to be playing in NBC affiliated leagues so I can see how they do over the summer, but it's becoming quite evident that the NBC is becoming less and less popular every year.

cody tyler played in the coastal plains league last summer. i believe its a pretty good league, i guess i would compare it to the jayhawk league of the east coast. lots of freshman and sophomores from south carolina, north carolina, duke, ect... i also had a buddie play in the new england league and i think that is a decent league as well but i dont know much about it. i know nothing about the florida league. i think the big thing is just getting guys in a league and on a team where they can play everyday.

Summer Baseball Update #1

Some decent starts, although small sample sizes, for a number of Shockers. Good to see that those good starts include a few Shocker pitchers in addition to the postion players. Hopefully, they all can sustain that level of play.

I noticed the Haysville Aviators have a lot of Dallas Baptist players and some Texas Tech and TCU guys.May be a team to watch this summer.

They may be a team to watch this summer, but I've already seen a couple of their games. For a christian organization, they don't have much class. It started last year in the NBC World Series with the Liberal Beejays, and it's carried over into this season. Different coach, probably different players, but still not much class. Fortunately I'm not the only one that has noticed it. They won't be getting my support this summer, regardless of the talent they have.

According to Paul Suellentrop OF Keenan Eaton will transfer to D-2 Colorado Mesa University for his final two years of eligibility. Keenan is from Parker, Colorado. This is not a surprsing move. Best wishes to Keenan.

Summer Baseball Update #2

I like these updates although I suspect these are very much like highlight videos that only show the good side of things. I guess the fact that there are some good things to report is a positive.

Took a look at the Shocks' summer pitching stats. Some good. Some not so good. Not a lot of innings other than Chandler Sanburn at this point.

Connor Lungwitz closed a game on June 8th pitching the 7th and 8th innings. He started the game on June 11th and went 6 scoreless innings. He has not pitched since then. Hopefully, he is not injured or if he is it is nothing too serious.

I like new pitching coach Mike Steele's confidence and positive outlook but I just don't know if we will have enough quality depth to improve very much from last year. So far this summer we have a few guys with really solid stats and then another group with very pedestrian at best stats. Hopefully, Willie Schwanke will be able to give us a full year and some of the newcomers can be effective. We'll see.

Speaking of Connor, did anyone notice his 4 for 5 game with a homer a few days back? He's still chopping wood for the Giants. Batting around .220 but hopefully he can continue to climb.

I was thinking that the summer updates that were being posted on goShockers.com were merely the high points and these stats would seem to bear that out.

Trey Vickers showing that he is our steady Eddie and perhaps our one really dependable player. Alec Bohm is showing some decent power although his BA is a bit lower than you would like. Wouldn't mind seeing Taylor Sanagorski get a chance to show what he could do behind the plate. Give Troutwine a day off every 3rd game perhaps. Josh Whisler has only played in 1 game. He had a good game, but his numbers don't mean much. Greyson Jenista and Dayton Dugas apparently don't like wood bats or the Cape Cod League is just too much for them at this point. Maybe they are just pressing as there are no doubt plenty of MLB scouts watching the Cape Cod games. Shocks still striking out too much for my taste.

These stats are not particularly encouraging at this point.

It's pathetic actually. Here we have what used to be this great tournament in Wichita that brought in some of the worlds best future MLBers. The last one I can remember that really made it big was Albert Pujols. Maybe Barry Zito, I can't remember. Pujols obviously jumps to mind. We used to have a good percentage of Shocker players in either the Jayhawk League or the Walter Johnson League (or the Kansas Collegiate League Baseball as it's known now). Now, maybe 3 or 4. I think scouts barely even attend the tournament anymore, and you used to be able to find the front row filled with them for an 8 am weekday game. This isn't just a rant about how WSU doesn't support NBC teams, but how the NBC doesn't get supported in general. I really, really hate the Cape Cod and the Northwoods League and all the other leagues for taking all the good talent for summer ball.

The strike out rate per 100 at bats is about the same as it was for the Shockers during this past season. However, I had hoped we had put that tendency behind us. I guess not.
