The only reason there isn't a Fire John Hayes thread is that it can't be done -- what a season.

One of the worst things you can have in baseball is a guy who keeps getting chances, and keeps going out there and being bad. At least if you get him out of the lineup or stop using him, he stops hurting you, but if he keeps playing, it's a continuing disaster.

Omar Moreno used to be that kind of player -- he could go out there every day for you, but he couldn't hit and couldn't get on base, yet teams used to pretend he was an everyday leadoff man because he could run. So he was bad on a daily basis. John Hayes this season is the collegiate relief pitcher reincarnation of Omar Moreno.

Personally I thought Butler should have pulled Hayes after he walked Mucha who wanted to sacrifice.

Now the Shocks get to face SIU's best pitcher tomorrow.

The highlight today was obviously Codi Heuer's performance and one silver lining is that John Hayes will not be available tomorrow.

What's even worse about Hayes is that he is not getting better. In his first 15 appearances, he was only scored on in 5. Now, over his last 8 appearances, he has been scored on 6 times.

And when I say scored on, that doesn't mean a run here and a run there. Only once, in the 11 times he been scored on, was only 1 run allowed. Also, all 28 runs scored on Hayes have been earned runs.

He has an interesting (to be kind) stat line. Pitched 26 innings and has 35 strikeouts. However, those 26 innings have also allowed 29 hits (7 doubles and 6 HRs), 18 walks, and 3 HBP. That's 40 men reaching base and 75 bases.

Check your math ... 50 runners in 26 IP. I really can't understand why he continues to be put into games the Shox have a chance to win. Butler, Kemnitz - TRY SOMEONE ELSE. SMH.

Well, on the bright side, guys, Hayes has yet to allow a triple.

It's amazing that a pitcher with a .276 opponents' BA could be so disastrous, but his complete opponents' line is .276/.397/.514 (by contrast, no Shocker regular on offense is slugging over .500). That is, shall we say, an eye-opening line; and it does indeed raise the question '85 alluded to: how can a guy pitching like this lead his team in appearances? Are the coaches secret fans of Steve Dalkowski, or what?

I was putting that together rather fast and thought something didn't look right. Thanks for the help. I can usually use it. At least I added up the total bases right.

I don't believe Hayes is going to "work his way out of it" as it's only getting worse. I think a couple of weeks break from in game pitching would help. He's drowning....let him come up for air.

Shocks fall in the final game of their series at SIU 4-1.

Chase Rader, the only Shocker senior contributing much this year, tied the game at 1-1 with a solo homer in the top of the 8th. In the bottom of the 8th Clayton McGinness gave up a solid single to left, a sac bunt and a semi-intentional walk to put runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out. At that point Tyler Jones relieved McGinness. A series of 3 duck snort pop ups resulted in a single to load the bases, a foul pop up the Greyson Jenista caught along the fence in short right field that ended up as a sac fly that scored the go ahead run with a 2nd run scoring on Jenista's wild throw home and a bloop double that bounced off 2B Luke Ritter's glove the plated a 3rd run and a 4-1 lead going into the 9th.

SIU Ace, Michael Baird, finished off the Shocks in the 9th for a complete game.

Clayton McGinness was very good for the 2nd outing in a row and had his longest outing as a Shocker pitching a very solid 7.1 innings throwing 90 pitches. Tyler Jones really was not that bad, just unlucky.

In fact, SIU won this series because they were on the receiving end of some very good luck and the opposite was true of the Shocks.

Still it counts in the record book and the hoped for 3rd place Valley finish seems like a long shot now.

WSU has been unlucky a LOT this year.

Or maybe it is something else.

A claim no one has made.

                        Obviously it has been.

This weekend the Shocks were unlucky and on Saturday afflicted by some of the usual problems. A bad start and a bad finish by pitchers, neither of which would have mattered if the Shocks had just a bit more good fortune.

Losing 27 times in 42 games is not "unlucky".

I don't care if WSU ends the regular season on a 13 game winning streak. Todd Butler is NOT the answer for head coach of Wichita State University. That is abundantly clear.

WSU will have a really easy decision to make at the end of May. That will determine how much they really care about baseball at WSU at this point. Eric Sexton's garbage negotiating powers is not an excuse either. The simple answer is to bite the bullet (and dollars) and save WSU from sliding further into the abyss with its legion of 50 fans that attend games. A coaching search should already be in place behind the scenes. It would be wise to place a call to a guy in California and get the deal done ASAP.

If Todd Butler is the head coach of Wichita State University next year, I may never attend another WSU baseball game for the rest of my life. It'll show that WSU gives exactly ZERO shits about baseball. Period.
                          Deuces Valley.
                          ... No really, deuces.

Yeah let's not put in our closer who has been warming up the whole game (Williams) and threw a shutout complete game against them last year.
Hayes didn't do bad. He threw great innings just got a homer hit off of him after a lot of pitches under his belt. Could have been way worse.
