We've even seen it right at WSU, where Mike Lansing's back issues that ended his 1989 season short of Omaha brought him back to WSU for a disappointing senior season and then ultimately led to his starting in the minors with a couple of years on an unaffiliated team in Miami, the first of which wasn't even very good. But then he was picked up by the Expos organization, and a year later began a respectable nine seasons in the majors.

If someone thinks you can fill their needs, they'll find you and pay you enough that you want to get on board.
Yeah, from following the 'Nuts it doesn't seem all that unusual for a player from independent baseball to be picked off by an affiliated team. Of course, for the great majority of players getting to the majors is pretty tough regardless of the path they take.

Roughly 70 percent of first-rounders make the majors, but fewer than 40 percent stick there for at least three years. Those modest success rates decline precipitously in subsequent rounds.

While I know this statement was supposed to be limited to the response which followed in that post, you are one of the most knowledgeable and well-informed Shocker fans I've ever seen - the breadth of the stuff you know across all WSU sports blows my mind from time to time.

Probably not the most appropriate place to drop this note so I apologize for the derail- just wanted to say that @1972Shocker adds a ton of value to this board and I am grateful for it.

@Play Angry thank you for those very kind words. The fact is we have numerous outstanding contributors to ShockerNet and with a variety of styles that make the board interesting, informative and entertaining. All in all I think we have pretty dang good board going in ShockerNet.

I don't know how many times I have heard fans calling into Coach's shows and talk shows and thought to myself that if they just followed ShockerNet they would already have the answer to their question.

isn't this a good thing guys are signing and continuing the trend of shockers getting drafted?

plus it clears up at least 2 stay/go players and openings for next year.

so how many players graduated and have been drafted ( and signed) so far vs how many extra will be on the team?

The Shocks lost 2 to graduation, Arens and Ashford, 2 to the draft so far, Hilliard and Kihle and I believe 2 departures have been announced, Dearman and Burns.

@shock10: has updated his list of potential roster members next year. It now sits at 46. We have 5 drafted players on that list in Schwanke, Williams, Anderson, Dugas and Lungwitz.

I expect Anderson,Dugas and Lungwitz will be on the roster next year. Schwanke and Williams are still question marks.

By rule the roster has to be trimmed to 35 by opening day next year. The list put together by @shock10: is now at 46 players.

Based on the 2015-16 roster on goShockers.com, which does not yet include the incoming recruiting class, we have 8 freshman who redshirted last year. That includes Brad Kinsey who did make 3 appearances and pitched 2.2 innings so I assume he is a medical redshirt.

We have 13 incoming freshmen and 3 incoming juco recruits.

It is very possible that the Shocks came through the draft with much less damage than HCTB was expecting.

Butler expects to battle the pros for several of the recruits after the June draft. Pittsburgh drafted Wabash Valley (Ill.) College pitcher Zach Lewis in the 33rd after his freshman season, before he decided to return for another season in junior college. Central Arizona College lefty Justin Seiwald and Seminole (Okla.) State pitcher Tyler Gibson, who spent his freshman season at Oklahoma, are also likely draft prospects. Numerous high school players are regulars on the high-profile exposure camps circuits and scouts will watch them closely in the spring. Louisiana outfielder Dayton Dugas and DeSoto two-way player Greyson Jenista might top that list.

“All three of those junior-college guys, we would anticipate them being drafted,” Butler said. “They’re kind of high-risk guys.”

Of the 5 guys mentioned above only Dugas was drafted and he has said he is coming to Wichita State. Hard to say exactly what that means in terms of the talent that is coming in.

@shock10: I noticed that you do not have Isaac Anderson listed on you current potential roster of 46 players.

Have you heard or seen something about him signing with the Dodgers or are the Shocks sitting at 47 players?

                        Looks like Zach Lewis had a rough year. 6.23 ERA, 34 2/3 IP, 43 H, 27 K, 17 BB. http://wvcwarriorathletics.com/sport...neup&pos=p&r=0

                        Justin Seiwald also had a rough year. 6.04 ERA, 44 2/3 IP, 49 H, 35 K, 16 BB. http://www.vaquerosports.com/Sports/...ge?view=lineup

                        Gibson had a good year. 2.45 ERA, 73 1/3 IP, 67 H, 58 K. http://stats.njcaa.org/sports/bsb/20...8?view=gamelog

So, only 1 of the 3 JuCo guys had a good year. Not a surprise that they weren't drafted, nothing special jumps out from the stats. Even Gibson doesn't strike a ton of guys out. We've been told about power arms the last few years, but have yet to see a ton. Hopefully a couple of these guys surprise, and the returners take a step forward next year.

                        • At least Gibson appears to have in idea where the strike zone is with 58 K's to 11 BB's. That's a decent ratio and an average of 7.1 K's to 1.35 BB's per 9 innings. He had a decent WHIP of 1.06

Those ratios from Lewis and Seiwald not as impressive:

                          Lewis was at 7.0 K's to 4.4 BB's per 9 innings. WHIP = 1.73

                          Seiwald was 7.05 K's to 3.2 BB's per 9 innings. WHIP = 1.46

                          • It is an interesting exercise to take the current potential roster of 46 players and try to winnow it down to 35 players. Of course, HCTB and PCBK have a lot more information available to them than any of us would as fans. For one thing they probably have some idea what they have with the 8 redshirt freshman that populate that list and they also obviously know the scholarship situation. I have very little to go on those points.

Nevertheless I thought I would take a stab at trying to come up with a 35-man roster. However, I would absolutely hate have to tell as many as 11 young men that their is no room at the inn for them. I am not going to name any names but I did come up with a roster that includes 18 pitchers, 3 catchers, 9 infielders and 5 outfielders and a cut list of 11 players.

That assumes that Willie Schwanke and Chase Williams return next year which after hearing that Isaac Anderson signed even though he was picked 1,212th out of 1,215 players I would think there is a reasonable possibility that one or both of these players could still sign. Obviously, if they do, two of the pitchers on my cut list would move back onto the active roster. So the mix of positions would be unchanged but the cut list would drop to 9 players. I am also assuming Dayton Dugas stays true to his word that he is coming to WSU and that Connor Lungwitz also will likely become a Shocker.
So those things are technically still up in the air until July 18th arrives. So theoretically the cut list could end being anywhere between 7 to 11 players.

If Schwanke and Williams both follow Anderson's path and sign that throws our starting pitching into a whole different light and level of uncertainty for next season.

                            • I'll play along. If we do lose the player's in question. A starting pitcher group of Tewes, Jones, Tyler, Bargfeldt, and a freshman maybe Lungwitz.
