I think it is quite a stretch to say that their wasn't more interest in the job because the cupboard was bare. In fact, based on a comparison of talent I have seen this year (ranked #2) versus what we saw on the field under the previous coaching staff, it appears the cupboards were fairly well stocked.

I think the lack of interest had more to do with ADES having already hired a pitching coach (which is usually the head coaches decision), and the fact that a legend was just fired for what appeared to be a 3 year lapse in NCAA regional appearances even though they had made a regional 7 out of the past 10 years including 2 super regionals...

and a high profile campus stalking incident, not to mention numerous less than flattering pics of HCGS floating around booster email inboxes.

Actually the cupboard was okay with a bunch of 1-year players (juniors and seniors) on their way out the door. Behind that though there was very little.

Part of that IMO is because of Gene's lame duck status his last couple of years no doubt hurt recruiting efforts plus I think Gene and his staff probably didn't care very much at that point if they weren't going to be around anyway and the effort put into recruiting may have not been quite as energetic.

This is pretty much a ground up rebuild in my opinion.

Whether or not hiring a HCIW while Gene finished out a few more years either wasn't proposed or considered or, if it was, it was shot down by one side or the other.

To think that a Coach who was given a 7-year contract is only going to get 2 or 3 years doesn't seem very likely to me.

The irony is that by going the Juco route HCTB has created a roster that, while having little senior presence, brought in 11 Jucos who very well may be thinking 1 and done. However, about 9 of those guys may want to rethink their situations in that regard.

I agree with your logic, especially after the link to the contract details. Additionally, that would reflect poorly on the AD that made that hire and gave a 7-year contract. You can't be in the habit of buying out coaches contracts every 3 or 4 years.

One item of interest to me is the 7 or 8 Freshman that haven't seen any playing time. Are these players that will RS because they aren't quite ready for the D1 game based on evaluations by our coaching staff or is it possible that HCTB realized this will be a tough year and lots of the JuCo transfers may be gone next year so he is setting things up for the future? Things may not be as bad as the look right now if several of these Freshmen could contribute this year. Just an optimistic thought...

If we are holding out some of our best talent, I would like the money I spent on tickets back.

I was thinking about that as well but I concluded that as bad as we are playing if these Freshman were better than what we are putting on the field they would be playing. I suppose HCTB could be taking a longer-term view of things since he has the security of a 7-year contract but since you only have your better players for 3 years in college baseball and I'm not sure he would want to waste one of those years on a redshirt if these young 'uns are really ready. Redshirting these kids will probably result in them being draft eligible after their redshirt sophomore year (assuming the meet the 21 year old threshold).

that would be a great question for the coaches show - I would be interested in hearing the answer.

I would like some of my money back as I paid full price for season tickets rather than $25 or $35.

I do not blame you. There is always a risk when you deeply discount products. Loyal customers who bought at full price have a tendency to be a little upset.

Call me a negative Nancy with this hypothetical situation, but we could easily go into the KU game with a record of 7-19.

We drop all 3 to UCSB (5-13), split WIU(6-14), take 2 from SIU (8-15), then lose at OSU (8-16), drop all 3 at TCU (8-19). God help us if that's what happens. If we go into the KU game with anything worse than 8-19 it's paper bag time.

                                Gotta feel for Butler.

He looks pissed with his pitchers in this epic collapse.
