  • This is unfolding pretty weirdly with this news. I cannot imagine anyone other than Standiford or Hooper wanting to inherit Kemnitz instead of starting fresh with their own guys. C'est la vie.

    • I don't feel bad.

I think the fact that Coach failed to recognize that there was even issue was telling of the blinders. I sincerely hope that he is able to move on and that our beloved alma mater and fan base is also able to forgive the OU debacle. Now that he is gone, I certainly am moving forward which includes recognizing Coach Stephenson for his accomplishments and efforts in building/creating Shocker baseball. All the best to Coach in this new phase of his life.

        • I think they should pay Brent for another year, but not let hem coach. It is unfair to the next coach. Whoever they hire, should be able to bring in his own staff. You can't expect someone to take full responsibility for the future success of the program if you don't let him build his own staff.

Unless.....a former player turned coach specifically requested for Brent to stay on the staff.

It's one year, might actually be a plus for the incoming Coach. If they mesh he can choose to keep one of the better college pitching coaches out there. If they bang heads, his contract runs out and no biggie, also might help transition into next season.

According to previous press reports Brent was under contract through June 30, 2014 (the same as Gene) so he was going to get paid for next year whether he stays or not. JT was the only one on a year-to-year contract.

                • Seems like keeping Kemnitz on provides some kind of transition and take some of the sting out.

It cripples any chance of a national search though. Our job is a good one, a very good one, but it's not the equivalent of Duke basketball. No nationally competitive candidate would likely accept inheriting a pitching coach from the old regime.

This signals very strongly to me that we are staying in house with this hire. I'd bet a pot of money it's either Standiford or Hooper at this point.

helps the new coach have a good transition his first year and then he can bring his guy in

Edited to remove some snark: The only candidates willing to accept those terms would be family tree hires. Which is exactly what I said.

Perhaps it helps with the returning players and the incoming recruits, especially the pitchers. Not sure what the benefit is beond that. A little surprised Gene would not want to keep Brent as part of his staff although maybe Brent is ready to move another direction as well.

Sort of. It's a re-hash of the same problem as it relates to recruiting though, only at a subset level.

My heart wishes that BK meshes well with the new HC, stays on as PC, and Gene hangs around Wichita and the program in some sort of a one-step-removed fashion. I know it's completely unrealistic.

                            • Gene and JT are divorced, correct? Isn't Brent's wife pretty well entrenched in the Wichita community? Might have been tougher for him to leave. At least we will still have the Brent Kemnitz show which is about the only coaches show I listen to any more.

Brent and his wife aren't together either.
