It is shocking to look at the recruiting classes from 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10. Those three classes set back the program to its current condition through a combination of bad luck and bad choices.

It really doesn't matter if you over recruit if you can't recruit talent in the first place.

Spaulding that is a good read. Don't really know the author, but I have had many of the same thoughts and several of the names mentioned seem worthwhile candidates. Young blood is definately needed, IMO, which should bring about not only an increased energy level but also an ability to relate to young players. Not sure Hill or Price are the direction to look and Wedge may not be the ideal candidate with no "recruiting" experience. Time will reveal what plays out but two more similar seasons seems an eternity to endure at this point. However, I will guarantee one thing--WINNING (MORE) GAMES--would resolve many of the concerns expressed on this board! GO SHOX!

How many wins is Gene behind Auggie?

According to my calculations Augie is at 1,847 and Gene is at 1,798 putting Augie up by 49 wins, although Augie has been a head coach for 45 years vs 35 years for Gene. So Gene has a very enviable record for sure.

Too bad the Shocks didn't pick up two more wins in 2012. Not only would that have put Gene at 1,800 wins but they may very well still be playing.

I tend to think that Gene will coach until he is on top. So, basically Augie is going to have to retire first and then it will take Gene a year or two longer to past him. The real question is will Gene still be in a shocker uniform?

Not to mention is hard to pass up making 400-500k a year.

I'm not sure Gene will outlast Augie. If Gene's contract is not renewed and is allowed to expire after the 2014 season he will be 68 or 69. Maybe another D-1 program would willing to hire him at that age and maybe not. He has a great resume but he also has his share of baggage. He probably will need two seasons after Augie hangs 'em up to catch him (assuming that Augie's lead does not grow too much between now and then).

Wichita State baseball might alter roster approach

For 35 seasons at Wichita State, loyalty and competition defined Coach Stephenson's life in baseball.

Now those two words are at cross purposes as Stephenson attempts to revive the program he restarted in 1977. He fears his loyalty to players may be hurting the program’s ability to compete. He is strongly considering a tougher approach to roster management, perhaps over-signing recruits to protect WSU from draft losses or cutting players who aren’t meeting standards on the field or elsewhere.

What stupidity. Another stupid excuse. I don't believe the problem is being to "loyal" but having 3 bad recruiting classes in a row that sullentrop has already documented. It is not the kids fault they were recruited into a program where expectations where above their abilities.

Not only can schoools point out that gene has told everybody he doesn't think he can win at WSU anymore, but now gene is on the record saying he is putting his own success ahead of the kids he recruits and he is done with that arcane principal of "loyalty". That should be a real winner.
