The DH is assigned before the game starts but may or may not be the DH for the entire game. You can pinch hit for your DH but then he is out of the game. You can pinch hit for any player at any position at any time in the game. But the player who is pinch hit for is done for the game and the pinch hitter, if not inserted into the lineup is also done for the day. Now if you ever go to a Shocker softball game the substitution rules are totally different and gives the Coach much more flexibility with their re-entry rules.
