"No guns were involved, they were on a hunting trip, the guns were not loaded", oh there were no guns involved and the guns that were not involved were not loaded. That is good to know.

With the back injuries to Beringer, broken the c7, t3, t4, t5, t6, t7, and t8 vertabrae and he will have surgery to insert rods into his spine, I would doubt that he ever pitches again.

So not to offend their families I will just call them stupid they are lucky that they are not darwin award winners.

I am so offended that you could even be on this website, and be talking so selfishly about someone who is in pain laying in the the hospital. Do you have anything better to do? Obviously not. This young man is in love with the game, and you have to sit there and talk crap thats not even true and also make a comment how he is not even going to play again? How could you? how hard is it to say that prayers are out to you and your families. He is probably already devastated, let alone has to read these comments from you. Knowing him, he will rise from this fall and make himself even better than he was before. i believe in karma.... Have you never made a mistake?

I hate to defend JJ at all, but it was, and always is, an insanely stupid idea to drive under those conditions. I also think most would be shocked if this kid ever played again.

I can say this though, at least JJ is consistent as he approaches this topic the same no matter who's involved.

I hope both kids are ok and and get better. I also hope they've learned from this and wise up.

Also, if you're family to this kid, coming on SN probably isn't the best thing to do and I think you could spend your time better.

I agree with JJ that it was a very poor decision to get in a vehicle if alcohol has been involved. They are both lucky to be alive, there's no doubting that. However, he could learn how to be a little more classy in his words. If Beringer ever does play again, it will be a miracle and a great recovery. It's possible, we've seen medical miracles before, but lets not kid ourselves, he's got a long, long recovery ahead of him.

Instead of putting the blame on these kids, lets just be thankful they are still alive, and continue to pray for them and their families, and wish them a speedy recovery. They don't need us to tell them they made a mistake, I'm sure they are hearing it from other people involved.

I also agree with subgod, no family members of either of these young men need to be on SN. Beringers family should probably be at the hospital with him.

No I certainly am not. I can however realte to the family in the matter of having a family members accident being followed by the media and its a terrible feeling and let me tell you, the media doesn't have a clue. I'm simply asking you to think of the family and respect their privacy. Again thinking and praying for everyone involved.

We do not know if either of these two were legally drunk. "Alcohol involved" could mean one open container was found in the wreckage. With that said, IMO, alcohol MAY have clouded their judgement but what caused the accident probably was driving a too fast for the conditions (darkness and gravel road). Hell, I've almost bit it one time into the ditch by doing the speed limit on a gravel road once. Exceeding the speed limit on a gravel road at night just compounds the safety issue.

I will wait and see regarding the law enforcement report as to whether tests came back if either one of these guys were legally drunk. If so, then yes there is room to question the behavior. In the meantime, and as far as I'm concerned, they were in a car wreck and were injured which happens every day in America and unfortunately happened to these young men.

Does anyone know if the Beringer family is in need of financial assistance? If so, is there a fund set up anywhere?

I am thankful that these guys are still with us, and am praying for their recoveries. I also hope other young people, teammates and otherwise do not think this cannot happen to them.

"Common sense is learning from your own mistakes, intelligence is learning from someone else's." Whether the mistake was simply driving to fast on a county road or more, there is still a lesson to be learned.

Definitely time for the obnoxious Clamdip to slither back under his rock and stay there. Anyone with a hint of grace knows that just because college kids do something stupid -- I know, imagine that! -- doesn't make it appropriate to pile on when their mistake rears up and bites them, and to do so with evident relish and in the most offensive way.

Personally, I've added him to my "ignore list" (a wonderful feature for which kai has my appreciation, as it also saves me the need to watch out for the posts of a certain other stalker / correspondent). I'd encourage others who find Clamdip as unpleasant as I do to take the same easy step.

Has anyone heard an update on how Zach and Tobin are doing?

Last I knew, Tobin was doing fine. I spoke to him the day of Zach's surgery and he just had a little bump on the head. I haven't heard any news on Zach yet but thoughts and prayers are still with Zach, his family, and the baseball team.

Glad to hear that Tobin is ok. Hopefully Zach pulls through. I'm worried about the criminal charges deal. Sounds like in the paper Zach and Tobin were both well intoxicated. That could be bad as they could both have charges filed against them. Let's hope not

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is waiting on the results of a blood test before proceeding with the case involving a one-car accident that injured two Wichita State baseball players in November.

Zach Beringer had back surgery to repair and stabilize several vertebrae on Nov. 21. Tobin Mateychick suffered a concussion, scrapes and bruises. Both are out of the hospital.

Trooper Clayton Fredrickson, who investigated the accident, said Kay County Troop K is waiting on results from Beringer's blood test before forwarding a warrant request affidavit to the Kay County district attorney. He said the test may not be finished until mid-January.

"Once I get the blood results back, I will send everything," Fredrickson said.

Fredrickson said he observed alcohol at the scene, including odors and one open beer can in the debris. He said he talked to Beringer and Mateychick at the scene and in the hospital and considered both to be under the influence of alcohol.

"It was plainly obvious," he said.

The accident happened around 11 p.m. on Nov. 18 in Kay County in northern Oklahoma. Beringer, Mateychick and two teammates planned to hunt ducks near Braman, Okla.
