Jordan Boyer has a strained oblique muscle and is not expected to be out long.

Cal does a good job working around a 1-out triple in the top of the 1st with the help of an excellent play by Paxton Wallace on a slow roller down the 3rd base line to end the inning. Paxton has done a nice job at the hot corner this season.

Cal was pitching well in the 2nd with good command. He did give up a 1 out single but with 2 outs he walked the left handed 8-hole hitter and the .220 hitting 9-hole hitter to load the bases. After a visit from Mike Pelfrey he refocused to strike out the lead off hitter, perhaps with a generous 3rd strike call from the ump on a 1-2 count, to end the threat.

Jake Plastiak leads off the Shocker 3rd with a single left out of the 8-hole. 9-hole hitter David VanVooren followed with a double into the left field corner scoring Jake. After Hunter Gibson struck out Luke Ritter lined and opposite field double into the right field corner to score David. Luke advanced to 3rd on a pitch in the dirt that he made a great read on but Wallace struck out and O'Brien fouled out to the 3rd baseman to end the at bat. But Shocks take a 2-0 lead,

Rhode Island gets a runner on 2nd with a 1-out double in the top of the 5th. After a strike-out Caleb had a 1-1 count on the lefty hitting Rhode Island DH using a nasty slider very effectively. However, the next slider was in the dirt and bounced of Noah Croft allowing the runner to advance to 3rd. The next pitch was also a slider down that the batter swung at and missed but it also bounced away from Croft as wild pitch that allowed the runner from 3rd to score. Shocks still lead 2-1.

Rhode Island goes down in order in the 6th with a nice running catch in center coming in to snag a blooper before it hit the turf.

The Shocks get that run back in the bottom of the 6th. Mason grounded an opposite field single to left just out of the reach of the shortstop. A wild pitch (ruled as passed ball, moved Mason to 2nd. Brady Slavens hit a slow, high chopper to 2nd that he not only beat out but the URI 2nd baseman's rushed throw was wide and went into the Shocker dugout scoring Mason and putting Brady on 1st. Brady stole 3rd.. He is a fluid looking athelete. Noah Croft struck out to end inning but the Shocks extend their lead back to 2 at 3-1.

After getting a ground out to SS on a nice play to his left by Luke Ritter, Cal gives up a solid base hit to right on a 1-2 count that pushes his pitch count over 90. Really nice, quality start by the freshman. He only allowed 1 lead off batter to reach base in 7 innings and only gave up 2 walks. Eric Segal came on in relief and got a stike out and a grounder to 2nd to end the inning.

The freshman from Rhode Island also had a decent 6 inning outing. URI is going to the bullen to start the bottom of the 7th.

I get it. No one likes where the baseball program is right now and everyone thinks they have the answer. Keep in mind recruits look at this board and won’t come here if it’s a no win situation.

Let’s try and focus on the positives even though it may be tough sometimes though?
lmao, the excuse network in here is bordering on alarming.

Focus on the positives? WHAT POSITIVES? What's your "right answer"?

You know what's getting stale and predictable? The ****ing baseball program.

Carver has given us good innings. Today’s game has a better rhythm than both games yesterday.

Agreed. The pace and rhythm and quality of play in today's game through 7 innings is much better. A pretty entertaining game.

In the Shocker 7th David VanVooren leads off with a walk. Hunter Gibson strikes out but David steals 2nd. Luke Ritter shoots a single to right to score David. Luke promptly steals 2nd and then went to 3rd on a wild pitch with 2 outs. After Paxton Wallace is hit by a pitch URI makes another pitching change bringing in a lefty to face Mason O'Brien. So much for the rhythm of the game. Paxton steals second as the count goes to 3-2 on Mason. Mason fouls out on what was probably ball four but perhaps too close to take.

Eric gets the 1st two outs in the 8th on infield grounders including some really nice glove work by Brady Slavens at 2nd on a sharply hit 1 hopper. Eric went to a 3-0 count on the next batter but got a high chopper to 3rd that Paxton Wallace showed off his gun to nip the runner for the 3rd out.

Brady ropes a single to left center to lead off the 9th and then promptly steals 2nd, the Shocks 5th stolen base of the season. This has been the most aggressive I have seen the Shocks on the bases this season. With 2 outs and runners on 1st and 3rd David VanVooren bunts and is ruled safe at 1st with Slavens delaying at 3rd then scoring giving the Shocks a 5-1 cushion heading into the 9th.

Replays looked like VanVooren was out but it was close, The umps reviewed the play and it stood as called. The 2nd video replay of the game that probably showed the umps missed calls but neither of which were overturned. Probably not a significant factor in the game.

Alex gives up a 1 out single but nothing else in the 9th and the Shocks have a really nice, well pitched, well played 5-1 win.

Makes such a huge difference when you throw strikes. Only 1 out of 9 URI lead off batters reached base. Only 2 walks between Cal and Eric. Nice job of hitting to the opposite field by the Shocks. Got the running game going. Also thought the Shocks had a very solid defensive game.

Whether or not they can do this consistently remains to be seen. So far they haven't played this well very often.

Kind of looked like the teams switched uniforms. Shocks played with some moxie they haven't shown much and URI was on their heels and making silly mistakes like swinging 3-0 down 3 runs.

I didn't think Cal had great stuff but he managed to keep URI off balance for sure. And he worked fast. Was anyone paying attention to the pitch calling? I didn't, but it almost seemed like the "pace" was too fast for the pitch call relay. Segal is starting to pitch to his potential. I don't want to give up on anyone, but Slavens and Vanvooren have to play more often than not, if not every day. Those 2 get it. Maybe Boyer can DH, I realize you can't sit a guy hitting .420 but both these guys are good.

Somewhat disappointing weekend for the way they played yesterday more so than the results. URI easily could have taken 2 of 3 from Rice and was good enough to get Mizzou once as well.

Huge week for this team to stay positive and keep goals in front of them. Must go 3-1 or better. Ku and their pitching presents a problem Wednesday, then the series against a Memphis team playing a little better than expected, but certainly a team we must beat to improve at all in conference.
