Jordan Boyer has a strained oblique muscle and is not expected to be out long.
Cal does a good job working around a 1-out triple in the top of the 1st with the help of an excellent play by Paxton Wallace on a slow roller down the 3rd base line to end the inning. Paxton has done a nice job at the hot corner this season.
Cal was pitching well in the 2nd with good command. He did give up a 1 out single but with 2 outs he walked the left handed 8-hole hitter and the .220 hitting 9-hole hitter to load the bases. After a visit from Mike Pelfrey he refocused to strike out the lead off hitter, perhaps with a generous 3rd strike call from the ump on a 1-2 count, to end the threat.
Jake Plastiak leads off the Shocker 3rd with a single left out of the 8-hole. 9-hole hitter David VanVooren followed with a double into the left field corner scoring Jake. After Hunter Gibson struck out Luke Ritter lined and opposite field double into the right field corner to score David. Luke advanced to 3rd on a pitch in the dirt that he made a great read on but Wallace struck out and O'Brien fouled out to the 3rd baseman to end the at bat. But Shocks take a 2-0 lead,
Rhode Island gets a runner on 2nd with a 1-out double in the top of the 5th. After a strike-out Caleb had a 1-1 count on the lefty hitting Rhode Island DH using a nasty slider very effectively. However, the next slider was in the dirt and bounced of Noah Croft allowing the runner to advance to 3rd. The next pitch was also a slider down that the batter swung at and missed but it also bounced away from Croft as wild pitch that allowed the runner from 3rd to score. Shocks still lead 2-1.
Rhode Island goes down in order in the 6th with a nice running catch in center coming in to snag a blooper before it hit the turf.
The Shocks get that run back in the bottom of the 6th. Mason grounded an opposite field single to left just out of the reach of the shortstop. A wild pitch (ruled as passed ball, moved Mason to 2nd. Brady Slavens hit a slow, high chopper to 2nd that he not only beat out but the URI 2nd baseman's rushed throw was wide and went into the Shocker dugout scoring Mason and putting Brady on 1st. Brady stole 3rd.. He is a fluid looking athelete. Noah Croft struck out to end inning but the Shocks extend their lead back to 2 at 3-1.
After getting a ground out to SS on a nice play to his left by Luke Ritter, Cal gives up a solid base hit to right on a 1-2 count that pushes his pitch count over 90. Really nice, quality start by the freshman. He only allowed 1 lead off batter to reach base in 7 innings and only gave up 2 walks. Eric Segal came on in relief and got a stike out and a grounder to 2nd to end the inning.
The freshman from Rhode Island also had a decent 6 inning outing. URI is going to the bullen to start the bottom of the 7th.
