I wonder if trying to impress the scouts got in his head.
I kinda think this is a general problem engrained in the culture of shocker baseball and possibly one of the downfalls of our program. We have so much success churning out draftees, that the kids in the progam worry more about draft position than winning the league and playing for championships.

That's a quite a bit later than I was expecting but I think Chris will probably sign. It would be very difficult for him to come back and equal or top his production from this year and, of course, you lose a lot of leverage as a Senior.
As a 18th rounder you don't have any leverage. Unless he slipped due to signability issues his slot bonus for the 18th round is not much.

Slot bonus? since when has baseball had a slot bonus?

Pray to the baseball gods that Smith and Mormann do not sign.

                  Draft Recap Through Round 30:

                  5/175 - Tyler Grimes - Twins
                  6/193 - Charlie Lowell - Marlins
                  7/227 - Brian Flynn - Detroit
                  18/554 - Chris O'Brien - Dodgers
                  21/654 - Chance Sossamon - Rangers
                  25/767 - Mitch Mormann - Detroit
                  26/791 - Josh Smith - Brewers

I don't believe that any of our recruits were drafted at this point. Not sure if that is good news or not.

Gotta feel for Tim Kelley. The pros must be really concerned about the status of his arm. A guy, if he had stayed injury-free may very well have been a Top 100 pick. Now it looks like someone will pick up Tim on the cheap.

Our weekend rotation is gone. Losing Morman could be really painful, as I think the staff was really counting on him. Chance is gone. Our non-drafted rookies BETTER be good because they are going to be counted on right out of the box.

I don't see anyone there returning.

I never said he wouldn't, I was pointing out that there is no set amount for what round you are drafted. They could offer him a dollar or a million, when selected has nothing to do with bonus.

Generally if you look at the bonus numbers the follow a pretty exponential curve. Of course there are exceptions depending on the franchise. Being drafted by the LA Dodgers who it has been reported is struggling to meet payroll - is not likely to be a big spender (unless they can't sign their high draft picks).

                          1. I wonder if Cale Elam moves to rotation

                          2. The little guy from Eastern Oklahoma State College struckout 85 in 65 innings this year. He had 13 K's in 12 innings as a freshman at OU. So he has potential. Looks like he also has control problems at times, so who knows.

                          3. I think Zack Beringer will have a solid year.

                          4. Minnis finished strong in the valley tourney, can he have a solid sophomore season?

                          5. McGreevy threw well most of the season, hopefully he can continue that next year

                          6. Aaron Labrie could be another Josh Smith, when you look at the numbers he had a really solid freshman season.

                          7. Seems like I heard a lot about Kris Gardner during fall (maybe I'm mixing things up 6 months later). I don't know what kind of injury he had and he is slated to play for el dorado this summer, may be someone who can contribute next year.

There are others as well, my concern isn't the pitching. It's all about the HITTING.

Regardless, no team is bound by rule on this. Flipping Hendry gave Watkins 400K just a few years back and I believe he was drafted in a similar round as COB if not 4-5 rounds later.

So all I'm trying to say is until Aug 16th has come and someone hasn't signed I just consider all the drafted players gone.

I don't disagree, in fact I really expect anybody who has an option to leave the program to get out. It is not like if they choose to come back they will be trying to win a national championship.

All I was saying that we have a pretty good idea of what the players signing bonus will be based on past history. Baseball America in their advance draft database has the bonuses. There are always exceptions. They are usually because a team drafted a player later due to signability concerns or because they didn't sign their earlier picks.

                                1. No
                                2. I like the chances of Brent turning this guy into a solid contributor as well.
                                3. I wholeheartedly agree. Love this kid's makeup.
                                4. If they can get Albert's early control problem corrected, which I think they will, then he's good to go.
                                5. I am not as high on McGreevy but I can't argue the numbers.
                                6. Ditto on Aaron, but I do think he can be a good set up type guy. Love the way he pitched at times.
                                7. Wish I knew, but I have no idea.
                                8. I share your main concern but we all need to realize that next year's team, barring a yet unknown change, has no Charlie Lowell, Tim Kelly or any other #1 guy that we've been so lucky to roll out for the last couple of decades.
