All I know is that when Gene left for Ou for a day, he said his recruiting budget was going to be some huge (like 12 times) factor larger than he had at WSU.

But part of the problem is that his WSU Contract requires that he gets 1/3 of his players from Kansas (12 players). If there aren't 12 really good division 1 players during a particular time we are hurt. Especially if a few of the good Kansas players go to KSU and Ku or anywhere else for that matter.
He is required to have 12 regardless. Some years that probably isn't a problem other years it can be a big problem.
I think it would be interesting to put this issue about recruiting budget to bed.

The bottom line is I don't believe Stephenson. I want to see numbers.

Please show me evidence that his contract requires 1/3 of his players from Kansas.

I had heard that the Kansas scholarship requirement was dropped ten years ago or so.

Wasn't it a Tom Shupe concoction?

The contract is open source. I don't recall a's we reading it a couple weeks ago seeing any stipulation (but I wasn't looking for that).

Enough open source data has been put in the open that I wouldn't believe any of Gene excuses without the facts in black and white. I think this coaching staff is on cruise control and dont have the energy to sustain the program.

Anybody else catch Brent's show after the game? He was pi**ing vinegar.

No. Can you give us a quick review of what was said?

The last ten minutes of the show, Kennedy gets to the "tips of the day" segment and Brent went off on a tangent. Brent started off talking about how they got booed in '89 for losing to Indiana State in the MVC Tournament. And then.....

Brent went off. Paraphrasing: People give me a bunch of grief that I sleep during games. Well, that's because I don't sleep night. Tossing and turning all night long. I hate losing. He said that we have a lot of spunk. If you're going to say something to my face, you're going to get some spunk back. He stated he was going to the auction tonight, and if you're going to say something (crappy) to me, be prepared. I'm not in a good mood. He made comments about the fans. After a commercial break, he clarified that the vast majority of the 5,000 who show up are supportive and that he was directing his comments toward the vocal minority.

Yeah......Shocker baseball today and Shocker baseball in 1989......that comparison sounds about right.

                    Scholarships

I've never heard Gene's alleged claim that 1/3 of his players have to be form Kansas (which is not to say it did or didn't happen; I simply don't know).

But regardless, the ridiculously low baseball scholarship limit (which essentially allows you to spend a pool of money equal to out-of state tuition times the permitted number of scholarships), combined with the NCAA's floor under the minimum amount of aid a player can receive, puts a premium on getting in-state guys. They're cheaper, and you use up less of your available money.

That is why it was added to his contract. WSU was not funding the full amount of scholarships. Gene wanted them to. To get WSU to agree to fund the full allotment of 11.7 scholarships each year, Gene agreed to get at least 1/3 of the scholarship players from Kansas.

It keeps WSU's scholarship cost down.

I have never heard of it being removed. It was added to Gene's contract by Belknapp in 1994. Although the concept might have been developed by Shupe.

We aren't the only fans having this discussion. It looks like UNL's prospect of finishing last in the big 12 for the third straight year has caused some talk of replacing their coach:

Sorry, but I need proof. I am simply not buying it.

He said something like; They (UNL) can become what Wichita State used to be, a program that recruits well, dominate in a inferior league, gets to regionals and make it to the CWS if the super regional match-up is right.

Even folks in Nebraska have seen the free fall this program is currently displaying. But he's right, not dominating this inferior league speaks volumes as to how low this program has fallen.

Here's why I am calling BS on the requirement of a certain amount of Kansas players.

Only 11 scholarships are allowed in college baseball. As most know, few players, if any, get anything close to a full ride.

In-state tutition and fees per year, based on 15 hours: $5,890

Out-of-state tuition and fees per year, based on 15 hrs: $13,924

The difference per year b/t all 11 scholarships being in-state vs. out of state is $88,374. Obviously, there is a mix.
