"Fair market value" in the United States for an 18yr-old basketball player is equal to exactly 1 free full-ride to any number of hundreds of colleges and universities.

That is literally what the market will pay.

This investigation proves that is incorrect. The "market" includes all off the book payments as well.

That's not true. That's what the market does pay due to it's constraints. But just this scandal in of itself proves it false. Literally we have a player paid 100k plus his full ride to go to a school. Ask yourself IF the NCAA had no amateurism rules would some of the players receive payment from the schools if allowed? The answer is obviously yes.

I honestly believe a paid system with caps and controls in place would actually seriously help smaller programs and increase parity. The current system allows larger universities to operate with out a "salary cap" so to speak because it's all off the books, but there were controls much of the playing field could be leveled. For example compare European soccer leagues to the American sports model. College athletics currently operate as European soccer does, and this prevents a lot of parity.

Do NFL teams? Do NBA teams? I think it becomes much easier to manage and find violators when there is a space above board to compensate players.

NFL and NBA players can get outside contracts .... Would that be allowed in NCAA? Dangerous slide here ...

I disagree with that premise. Is Lebron underpaid? Yes. But it's because he is operating in players association that has decided it would rather the earnings of the league be more evenly distributed among it's membership. Within the league everyone knows revenues and how much will be paid out. For example Ronaldo and Messi operate in a uncapped environment and probably the only two stars on a level with Lebron in terms of skill and marketability and they each receive between 40-46m USD per year.

The NBA is not the free maket, it’s a business.

As a business, they have decided that it’s better for their teams to have some sort of competitive balance, vs only a couple of teams that matter and twenty-eight others that don’t.

Not sure you can call what exists in College Basketball a free and open market. Are you saying that if these colleges and universities were allowed to pay any amount they like that they would refuse to? Not to mention that College Sports are very heavily subsidized by the U.S. Tax Code.

One other key differentiation between NCAA and NFL/NBA? NFL/NBA are Private. Majority of NCAA schools are state funded .. ie if they start paying market value, it comes out of taxpayers pockets essentially.
