Why would they even try to hide it from their own people? I'm confident it's just written up as Advertising, or Promotional Materials. Accountants in those situations have learned long ago not to ask too many (actually none) questions.

Now for the CPAs - the independent guys. the money went to a charitable organization. That charitable organization will be more than happy to confirm that every penny of that money is going to help inner city kids get out of the cycle of poverty (keep singing this song through many verses). Since the charitable organization is an "unaffiliated third pasrty", that's enough confirmation.

What makes you think accountants are honest? There's a lot of good paying work that requires accountants to find the "correct" answers to any questions they might ask.

Yes I remember the old adage about two accountants applying for a job and the boss asks "what's 2+2?" The first answers "four", the second answers "what do you want it to be?"

          • I heard Vitale crying about this and how shocked he is and outraged at Pitino.

            My instinct says GFY, Vitale!!!

If you're interested in contacting some beancounters in the latter group my understanding quite a few of them are located here.

Enron's Jeff Skilling is still in residence there.

              • I hardly watch ESPN anymore (because its becoming too political) but I flipped it on this morning. It didn't take too long to get tired of the talking heads making excuses and saying that they should pay players and that the system is screwed up. I got sick of it and turned it off.

I was only getting bits and pieces but one of them said that the colleges should pay the athletes their "fair market value". I don't know what that might do to NCAA Basketball as we know it but it wouldn't be a good thing.

                • "Fair market value" in the United States for an 18yr-old basketball player is equal to exactly 1 free full-ride to any number of hundreds of colleges and universities.

That is literally what the market will pay.

I agree...I beleive that they were saying to pay according to basketball ability

                    • I don't think the talking heads at ESPN have thought this all the way through. But that is par for the course.

Just like with all cable news, they are paid to talk (and rabblerouse), not think.

That would obviously make college basketball into a pro league. Then there would have to be salary caps. It seems going that route might actually increase the amount of cheating.

It could get even stickier. Would football money be allowed to be used for basketball?

                          • Full scholarship and cash in the 30-50k range or the NBA and Euro leagues need to step up in a way similar to baseball. The latter would be preferable. I think the Title 9 implications of the former could get ugly.

That's not true. That's what the market does pay due to it's constraints. But just this scandal in of itself proves it false. Literally we have a player paid 100k plus his full ride to go to a school. Ask yourself IF the NCAA had no amateurism rules would some of the players receive payment from the schools if allowed? The answer is obviously yes.

I honestly believe a paid system with caps and controls in place would actually seriously help smaller programs and increase parity. The current system allows larger universities to operate with out a "salary cap" so to speak because it's all off the books, but there were controls much of the playing field could be leveled. For example compare European soccer leagues to the American sports model. College athletics currently operate as European soccer does, and this prevents a lot of parity.
