The funniest part of Big 12 expansion talk is not so much about improving the league, but increasing revenue from a tv deal that is years from renegotiation. schools want more tv money. They want to add schools to boost revenue from the tv deal, then not share that money with the new schools. The other option is to blackmail the networks to give the conference more money to not add these crappy schools. Either way, it doesn't make the conference better.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I've been giving this a while lot of thought and maybe I've been a little off base in my opinion. After some second thoughts, I think the Big 12 should be proactive and jump to 16 teams. Here is who they need to add:
      Houston
      Southern Methodist
      Texas- El Paso
      Texas State
      Texas- San Antonio
      North Texas

This way, they capture the valuable Texas market, plus own Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin and Eel Paso! The networks would be clamoring to ink a national deal. Also, the conference would no longer be seen as vulnerable, but strong. With league offices in Dallas and teams spread throughout the state, this surely would be above board, with no one school exerting undue influence. Plus, the whole country wants to watch Texas football.

Which 2 Texas schools would have to play in the non-Texas division? North Texas would be an obvious choice, since North Texas is really close to Oklahoma. I'm guessing Baylor would be the other, 'cause Baylor is, you know, "different".
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

I like the way you're thinking. Maybe we need to get Ann Richards and Ken Starr to fight it out on the Longhorn Network.

Can you imagine the political clout schools like Kansas State and Iowa State would have in that conference? It'd be awesome!

                  Dallas is a "neutral site"?

Rice and SMU, along with Houston, whooda thunk? Funniest stuff, ever!

Just save us all the drama, take the three former SWC teams, give BYU a shot and call it a day!

Maybe they could talk Phillips into opening up the school again and joining!

It will probably end up being just 2 teams, but I'm hoping for Uconn, UCF, Houston and BYU. I'd prefer USF instead of Houston but that's unreasonable.

I really think that SWC 2.0 is the ultimate outcome. I moved to Omaha right when Nebraska went on their national championship run in the 90's. It was an interesting time for me, as I kind of resented all of the Nebraska hype. That said, the Big 12 formed during that time and I remember Tom Osborne's warnings. At the time, I thought he was a whiney bich. In time, everything he warned of has come true. The last of his prognostications was that in time, the Big 12 would become another version of the SWC. I think the Big 12 is much closer to having 7 SWC members running the show than you can imagine.

You have already heard the argument for UH, Rice will be about academics, peestige and endowment, and SMU will be sold on academics, endowment and the need to capture the Dallas market.

Good luck capturing the Dallas market with SMU. The Cowboys = the Dallas market; everyone else is just along for the ride. Or, to put it another way, when it comes to college football, there IS no Dallas market except for one weekend in October when one is shipped to Fair Park from north and south of the Red River.

By the way, some of the teams supposedly on the Big 12 expansion list were pretty amazing -- Arkansas State, East Carolina, and Northern Illnois? Seriously?

Northern Illinois is not interested in changing conferences.

I don't know why...with those teams, they might actually be able to win a football conference game sometime. Perhaps.....maybe.....at home.
