They have a head start of the research since UNC professors aren't distracted by little things like teaching classes that actually meet.

It's hilarious and ironic to me that stuff like this is happening in the same time frame as the idea of not only providing scholarships, but paying players, too.

It really exposes the true situation completely. This is professional sports... At some universities, the education thing is such a joke.

I feel like a late night talk show guy should just sum it up for everyone and roast it.

For some other program not named UNC.

Class action lawsuit has been filed by a former FB player because he was not given the education he contracted for. Claims he was told which majors he could take and his classes were scheduled before he even showed up.

                  Openening line of article:
The biggest question surrounding the so-called “paper class” scandal in the North Carolina athletic department is whether or not it will have an effect on the 2005 or 2009 national titles that the Tar Heels won.
A little tough to take this guy too seriously if he thinks that this is the biggest issue surrounding this academic fraud. If the only thing UNC had to do to make this go away was to vacate those two national championships they would do it in a heartbeat.

Found the link to the lawsuit

Former University of North Carolina football player Michael McAdoo has filed a lawsuit against the school, saying it failed to provide him and other athletes a quality education by guiding them toward sham classes.

Yes, and Western and Coastal Carolina, too. Spurrier's just glad that South Carolina is in a different state.

UNC will probably escape scot-free. UNC has announced it has hired the famous law firm of Dewey, Cheatham and Howe to represent them in dealing with their academic scandals.

There's some interesting things that SHOULD be relevant to this UNC case based on what I know happened at FSU a few years ago. Which barely even TOUCHES what UNC has done here: essentially, one "Music Appreciation" course run over two years and a few other improper benefits from the same people. FSU self-reported the violations, and ended up being punished with four years probation, scholarship reductions for three seasons, and the following list of vacated accomplishments/wins:

FROM THE 2006-2007 BASEBALL SEASON:4 victories total consisting of:

There were a number of interesting comments made at the time, including:

Thomas (Dennis Thomas, the vice chair of the NCAA Committee on Infractions) said on Friday that the instant a player cheated in class -- regardless of whether school officials knew about it -- he became ineligible, and if that athlete played in a game, it must be vacated. That could cost FSU games from 2006, when the academic fraud began. "They are ineligible at the time of that violation until they are reinstated," Thomas said. "If they participated while ineligible, obviously the games they participated in will have to be vacated. The trigger is if those 61 individuals obviously as identified by the institution committed academic fraud. At that point, they rendered themselves ineligible."
So if that was the punishment given to FSU for essentially one class and one tutor that FSU's President self-reported to the NCAA, the same standard would have to be held against UNC for 18 consecutive years of cheating, right? And far more considering the lack of institutional control that would have to go into this information taking so long to come out or be dealt with and still never self-reporting. And there should be punishments against coaches that obviously knew about this information but didn't report it (including Roy Williams, who obviously knew about it and began pushing his players away from it, but didn't report it).

FSU's case involved 61 individuals. UNC's has included THOUSANDS.

Per NCAA precedent, UNC should be vacating every athletic contest a participant competed in. That would likely include 21 of UNC's 40 NCAA national championships (three national championships in men's basketball, two soccer national championships, five women's field hockey national championships, 11 women's soccer national championships), 18 NCAA tournament appearances in men's basketball and 9 ACC championships, 225 of Williams' wins, 105 of Smith's wins, etc.

And it won't surprise me one bit if they get away with a slap on the wrist.

They SHOULD be stripping them of all of that and seriously considering stripping accreditation for certain programs, if not the entire school itself.
