Isnt Healthcare one of the largest expenses of most European countries and a major reason why many of them are in such economic distress?
A couple of those European countries have announced that the welfare state they've created is no longer sustainable and are backing away from it. They're seeing the concequences and paying the price and backtracking at the same time some in this country want to copy what hasn't worked there...

    • The WHO report is a joke among serious economists. Here is but one example from the Cato Institute think tank, as an example of how badly biased it is:

You beat me to it. The WHO is highly politicized and has about the same reputation as the global warming zealots.

It false. You can believe me.

I assume that by global warming zealots, you mean people that advocate for taking action against global warming, not climate skeptics. Correct? If so, just remember that it does have parallels with healthcare, in that the entire rest of the developed world doesn't see it as an issue and only a small section of the US considers global warming to be a conspiracy despite the extensive scientific backing. But that digressed from the topic at hand.

            1. I did mention that WHO was not the best possible solution, just the best available. And it is downright hypocritical to try and attack WHO for being politicized by using a report from an institute that was founded to exert societal influence towards libertarian policies (by our very own Charles Koch). While they are usually a fairly reputable institution, they are still a biased institution themselves. Just because they align with your particular biases doesn't mean they have a moral high ground.

            2. Even disregarding the combining rankings, you can get a clear picture from the individual stats. See this demographic. The US pays more for worse care, and this leaves out many of the smaller countries that were also ranked above the US.

            3. The WHO article is just one example of a ranking system. They all agree that the US is one of the worst run systems in the developed world. Here's an example. Another. Others:

            http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2013/01/new-health-rankings-of-17-nations-us-is-dead-last/267045/

No matter which facts you use, you cannot twist them in such a way that the US system makes sense from a global perspective.

Again, the systems in Europe cost less than the one in the US. The US is simultaneously more "socialist" by dollars spent and less effective (as a side note, Social Security is the biggest welfare program in the world!) In fact, most of the European countries with large economies (ie Germany, Britain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France) are doing fine. The poor states are in debt to other European countries, and those countries were struck far more harshly than the US was by the global recession; that is far more integral to the financial insolvency of those countries than their "cheaper than the US" system of healthcare.

Healthcare is a large expense, but I've already noted that the US is the largest per capita spender on healthcare (IE, that every other system costs LESS not more). Declaring it as the main reason for the financial insolvency of the European countries is disingenuous for that reason. Instead, the reasons why most of the European countries are in economic distress are numerous and varied, and are far more linked to international problems like trade deficits and excessive harm from the global recession then their national healthcare systems.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Exactly, those bastards have been buying off Washington for years to protect that nasty little monopoly the have going on. What we need is an ObamaHair program.
