I can see why the average bandwagon, superficial, know nothing KU fan (I know that's awfully redundant) would be excited about the prospect of Harbaugh being their next coach. I just find it hard to believe Jim is interested any more that just getting leverage for his current job or a real job. The only people that think KU is a real football program are a few KU knuckleheads. Everyone else knows its a 2nd rate program, with 2nd rate support, 3rd rate facilities and will ALWAYS play 2nd fiddle to basketball. They do, however, have a 1st rate dick for an AD.
I actually think Turner Gill would do an admirable job at KU....but he could do a GREAT job and be just over .500. But I don't think for 1 nanosecond that he is even being considered by Lew. Feel free to read ANYTHING into that you want.
KU also pays their coaches generously, too. Mangino made $2.3 million this last year, Harbaugh made $1 million.
That said, football will always play second fiddle to basketball at KU. Jim is staying where he's at, and for good reason. The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

2nd rate support, wrong
3rd rate facilities, lol absolutely wrong, the new facilities are top notch
Gill not being considered by Lew, wrong yet again
Why does KUs coaching and overall upgrades to its football program bother so many people?

First rate football programs: Texas, Oklahoma, A&M, Nebraska, USC, Michigan, Penn State, Florida, LSU, Alabama, Notre Dame etc......
There are AT LEAST 25 schools in this league. KU AIN'T in it. Never has been and WILL NOT BE ANYTIME in the foreseeable future.
Maybe, MAYBE they are in a second tier of schools......so you're dead wrong about #1.
First rate support....see #1. You can pleasure yourself all you want with the Williams fund......UT wipes their ass with the Williams fund. Memorial stadium holds 50k....it is RARELY full. Outside of the last 3 years and Nebraska games, it might never have been full. It's about 90 years old and looks like a pile of garbage. Hell Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium holds 60k.....2nd rate support is a GIFT here. Some would argue 3rd rate in BCS conferences. So again, you're totally opposite of correct.
They have upgraded some of the facilities. I'll give you a push here, but a whole bunch of the upgrades are due to basketball, not football. Still, have you toured some of the tier 1 schools I mentioned? Oklahoma upgraded their fitness center about 20 years ago at level better than KU's today. I'll give them a solid tier 2. Push.
It would appear Lew did consider Turner. Obviously he wasn't the first choice, but I'll take the hit here. You get 1.
Their upgrades don't bother me or anyone else I know. Turner Gill is in all likelyhood NOT an upgrade from Mark Mangino, but whatever floats your boat. Time will tell.
KU is about $100M and AT BARE MINIMUM at least 1 trip (since they have ZERO and remind me when the last time they won a conference championship) to a conference championship game from even being mentioned in the same breath as a tier 1 program. And with the re-emergence of NU and Bill back in Manhattan, a return visit to the weekly BOTTOM 10 rankings is FAR more likely.
Class dismissed.

As for the facilities I was referring to the new 31 million dollar complex which even Lou Holtz and Herbstreit commented that it can compete with many other football schools. The stadium though is lol horrible, there is a freaking track on the field. There are probably some high schools in Texas with a better stadium. I have no idea what they plan to do with that stadium but upgrades should be #1 on the list.
As for football revenue they were suprisingly #11 out of 118 D1 teams in 2007-2008.

Not saying they are going to ever be an elite school for football. But you have to admit they are a program on the rise and can atleast be competitive in the Big 12. The fact that Tuberville, Houston Nutt, and Harbaugh had interest in the program tells you they're doing a few things right.

Mangino got $3,000,000 out of KU. That is $2m more than what I was guessing.
He settled for half. Probably smart on both the University's and Mangino's behalf.
