kc, the feds should not be in the business of telling states what to do. It should be left up to the states. I feel guilty because I don't believe in federal regulations or earmarks. But I'm torn in this case because of the unfunded mandate handed down by the EPA.

Another example would be the integration of schools in the south or voting rights. I doubt Gov Wallace and Maddox would have done the correct thing without Fed intervention.

I also doubt the States have the resourses to handle many problems without Federal help.

The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works -- whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account, to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day, because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government. Having federal troops enforce a federal law is far from the same thing as providing states and cities money.

Whose paying for this stuff? WE ARE. It isn't free.

If locals and cities can't afford something, then they shouldn't do it.

This shifting around tax money has gotten idiotic.

Why should we Kansans pay for the park in South Carolina? We should we pay for the Cow Girl hall of fame in Ft. Worth? And Texans shouldn't pay for the fake prison proposed by former Congresswoman Boyda in Leavenworth.

I have stayed away from this forum for a while. In part, because I had nothing of substance to say…however:

A lot of this so called stimulus, at least in my opinion, is aimed at solidifying the Democratic base and its overall power. It that way, it is very much like many of FDR’s “stimulus” efforts and otherwise prior to the Second World War. So call me a skeptic.

It won’t help the overall economic problem.

Super. My question was rhetorical. However, do they have a backbone or influence? Or, more importantly, the political savvy to capitalize on what I view as common values? I just don't know.

The only change that is going to make any difference is term limits and the federal government going bankrupt.

The first will never happen and the 2nd already has.

As for government stimulus:

Does it make more sense to have the $1 trillion in the economy or taken by government to dole out as they see fit. I don't know what the vig is, but with governemnt it's pretty high. Mind you these are the same morons there that pretty much got us in this mess to begin with. Or have useless CEO's pay working Americans 1.2 million to remodel their offices? At least that money went to someone. That money is circulating....

I don't care what Buchanan says -- I don't have a lot of respect for that guy especially after his last book. As for Will, who I generally like, -- you could say that about every President a week into his first term. However, I hope Will is right.
