Russia could have claimed the high ground if it had stayed within the separatist provinces. The moment they went into Georgia, they lost it.
The only innocent parties left are the South Ossetians.
Well put.
And I've never trusted the Russians. But this issue is interesting to follow. I'm curious to see what Europe does as well as NATO and the worthless UN.
Russia attacking Georgia hmmmm, that's like the pot calling the kettle black isn't it? Why the hell are we still in Iraq? Saddam is dead, we found no weapons of mass destruction, and the majority of our soldiers are dying from not active engagements with the pockets of terriosts, but using humvees patroling the streets like police officers and getting blown up by IED's.
Our military presence over there is nothing more than glorified police.
Russia had been looking to make such a move over the last year - the only question was of where. They have been feeling squeezed on their periphery for years and were looking for a place to reassert themselves. They were particular angry over the Kosovo independence and the ramifications it might bring in their sphere of influence.
It look though Georgia fell into the the trap, it was their own invasion into S. Osseta that gave Russia them their "cover". The swiftness of the Russian movement of its forces meant they had a plan ready to execute. They were sending a message to those on their periphery again - were back.
Russia pushes deeper into Georgia. The EU needs to step up and put more pressure on Russia. They can't feel comfortable with this kind of aggression being asserted.
All this came down to was Russia flexing their muscles. And they did it knowing that the US couldn't say anything about them invading another country, because, as we all know, the US invaded Iraq. So Russia had us right where they wanted us. Unable to say anything because our government would be the biggest hypocrits on the planet had they publicly gone after Russia for this attack.
The US gov't has been quite vocal about thier opposition to the invasion. And there is a difference between the two. The history of the two countries is a big difference as well as the support of other nations.

The EU can't step up. They depend on the direct piplines from Russia for oil/gas.
SubGod22: Fox News is certainly a "fair" source to cite.
How is the actual President (and not "if I were President I'd be so tough" John McCain) dealing with the 3 AM phone call issue? If you watched the Daily Show last night, you'll have the answer. Bush wasn't on the phone at 3AM. He was cheering at the Olympics and seemed annoyed that this "international crisis" was interfering with his enjoyment of the games.
So how critical is this crisis? How important are the foreign policy skills of the President? Well, Bush is essentially AWOL watching the Olympics (with Vladimir Putin, at times) and WW3 has not started yet. (Of course, Bush can see Putin's soul. ;-) )
Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful: Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.
Could also be Russia flexing its muscles for the US to deter our potential missile defense system in eastern Europe. Showing us that they have no problem enforcing a "buffer zone" around its borders.

I love how Fox News is laughable but get your news from The Daily Show.
Spangler: Do you prefer CNN? I admit Fox has a right leaning slant to the news, but CNN has just as much of a left leaning slant to thiers. And if you're relying on Jon Stewart for your info....
