Is this part of the wobble effect that happens ~ every 10000 years? I believe the Aztec calendar that abruptly ends was tied to this phenomenon.

The biggest concern is magnetic flip. That is the reversal of the magnetic north and south poles. The belief is that during such an event that there would be a prolonged period of weakening of earth's magnetic field which would result in problems with the electrical grid, satellite communication, changing weather patterns, and increased rates of cancer. This magnetic flip appears to be a purely natural, cyclical event. Some theorize that the current global warming is not man-made but the result of the current weakening of earth's magnetic field.

Don't the poles flip every ... like ... 100,000 years? Or was it 10,000? 1,000,000? It's a big number and memory fails. Anyway, the flip itself can take 100s or 1000's of years. In other words we could be in the middle of a flip right now, and not even know it. Or not. Only centuries from now will we know.

For me what's more impressive is the solar poles flipping every 11 years.

No, no, no. That is NOT how it goes. It goes like:

OMG!! THE AMERICAN INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IS CAUSING A POLE REVERSAL! THE CARS ON THE HIGHWAYS ARE CAUSING ABNORMAL SHIFTS IN THE FLUX LINES, COMPOUNDED BY THE MANUFACTURING OF PLASTIC -- WHICH IS A BYPRODUCT OF THE EVIL OIL INDUSTRY! AAAAHHHHH INITIATE A UN SANCTIONED TAX ON AMERICANS BEFORE ALL THE WORLD'S CHILDREN DIE!!

I'm Al Gore, and I approve this message.

An interesting exchange of words between a CNN host and the Founder/Co-founder of "The Weather Channel" regarding climate change. It is very thought provoking and reiterates the adage "the devil is in the detail".

An interesting article I read some time back about the Kyoto Protocol stated that once written, it had a less than 50% agreement. It was rewritten and softened and received a 60% approval. The 40% that did not approve were dismissed as authors thereby receiving a "consensus".

NASA will attempt to "hack" into the Opportunity Mars rover to fix a non-volatile memory problem. The question is at 10 years old how much "life" does the rover have left. It was originally anticipated that Opportunity would be a 3-month mission so it has certainly exceeded expectations.

Maybe Martians just keep rebooting it?

UK-led Beagle 2 lander found on Mars

The UK-led Beagle 2 Mars Lander, thought lost on Mars since 2003, has been found partially deployed on the surface of the planet, ending the mystery of what happened to the mission more than a decade ago. This find shows that the Entry, Descent and Landing (EDL) sequence for Beagle 2 worked and the lander did successfully touchdown on Mars on Christmas Day 2003. Beagle 2 hitched a ride to Mars on ESA’s Mars Express mission and was a collaboration between industry and academia. It would have delivered world-class science from the surface of the Red Planet. Many UK academic groups and industrial companies contributed to Beagle 2.
