Well this is bad optics and frankly unbelievable.
"Wichita State University’s tuition costs are a little below average, and the median salary six years after graduation is actually pretty decent." So this is as bad as it gets in Kansas?

Wonder where they got that "junior's" quote? After all, that is just a personal observation from 1 student.

Agreed, this is bunk. WSU is a waaay better value than KU.

      • If that median salary is accurate, and not from a decade ot more ago, then WSU needs to purge some worthless degree programs.

Other than that, that article is worthless.

That could be said about a lot or most universities, but that's not going to happen.

Yeah, in Kansas when people think of Aerospace excellence they think of "Salina" - ROFL

I think the magazine focused first on graduation rates as a or the primary indicator and then pounded a square peg into a round hole to fit their narrative. That’s the only thing that could explain WSU’s position when contrasted to the other public 4 year universities and multiple expensive private schools in Kansas.

                      • Not sure if it was mentioned here already, but a consortium of local partners led by Wichita State was selected by the Department of Commerce Economic Development Organization (EDA) for a $500,000 dollar grant to further develop a proposal that could see them net up to $100,000,000 in grant awards.

The WSU led group was one of 60 finalists out of 529 submissions. The WSU group will now compete for the larger pool of money, with finalized proposals due in March to the EDA. 20-30 winners will be announced, and will earn anywhere from $25-100 million dollars each.

The WSU proposal, if selected (or funded through other avenues) would kick-start five major projects. All of which have positive implications for the Wichita area, and several are direct construction projects that would add to the educational and economic progress the Innovation Campus and WSU Tech has been leading the past few years (thank you Bardo for being such a visionary and fighting through entrenched naysayers to get us to where we are today).

The projects are as follows (direct construction highlighted in bold):

                        1) Small- and Medium-Sized Companies Additive Manufacturing Adoption Strategy
                        2) Expansion of Semiconductor Testing and Evaluation Facilities for U.S.-Based Semiconductor Manufacturing
                        3) Resiliency of Smart Manufacturing
                        4) Industry and Entrepreneurial Cyber Manufacturing Convening
                        5) Workforce Expansion: Construction Project for National Center for Aviation Training (NCAT) Advanced Manufacturing Training and Research Building

Of note, in the description of number 2, the proposed project calls to "create and equip a university-based testing and evaluation facility to support the semiconductor industry." Wichita based Integra Technologies is the assumed lead and the WSU Innovation Campus would be the likely location. Number 5 seems to align with WSU Tech's mission, and one would reasonably expect the "80,000 sqr ft" building to be built at Jabara as it would "be home to advanced manufacturing training, education, and research programs... and will also be home to the newly implemented professional pilot program."

Details for those interested can be found here: https://eda.gov/arpa/build-back-better/

                          • Apparently, per BoR twitter, WSU gave the BoR an update today on the University’s economic prosperity plan…as did KU and KSU. I can’t find much on it right now though.

                            • I hesitate to mention this but there was an article in the Eagle about the developer who is behind the Medical school in Wichita set to enroll its first students this fall. Talked a lot about how the development of 4-5 properties will have an enormous impact on downtown what with the student apartments and a new venue for eating and catering by the Wichita State Tech Culinary school. She and her husband are both graduates of ku but apparently it was ku that fought tooth and nail against her starting the Med School in Wichita.

                              • No way! KU fighting against something positive in Wichita? Who would have ever thought that would be the case?!
