WSU - WSU ranks No. 20 in US for engineering R&D funding

Wichita State University has moved into the list of the top 20 universities in engineering research and development (R&D) expenditures, according to the latest data compiled by the National Science Foundation’s Higher Education Research and Development Survey.

NSF’s latest data ranks U.S. universities in various categories, including R&D spending broken down by subfield and funding source.

For fiscal year 2021, Wichita State reported total R&D expenditures of $192 million – up from $154 million in 2020. Wichita State has moved up one spot to third in total aerospace R&D expenditures with $153 million; and maintained its rank as first in industry-funded aerospace R&D with a total of $75 million.

“Research is at the heart of Wichita State’s mission and vision. It drives innovation, advances knowledge, and helps solve complex problems facing our society,” said Dr. Rick Muma, president of Wichita State. “As Kansas’ only urban public research university, this ranking is an honor, but it is not a surprise. And it sends a signal to the rest of the country that Wichita State is a powerful presence in the research arena, particularly in engineering.”

In recent years, the National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State has increased its relationship with various divisions of the Department of Defense, which has led to a fifth-place listing in federally funded aerospace R&D expenditures with $63 million.

These rankings put Wichita State among other prestigious engineering universities such as the Georgia Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins, Notre Dame, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Purdue and Stanford.

With increasing contracts and awards from industry and federal agencies, Wichita State expects to continue climbing the ranks in the NSF’s survey. The 2022 numbers will be compiled by NSF and published in late 2023.

Wichita State University moved to No. 2 on the national list of industry-funded engineering and research and development, according to the latest data compiled by the National Science Foundation’s Higher Education Research and Development Survey.

NSF’s latest data ranks U.S. universities in various categories, including R&D spending broken down by subfield and funding source.

For fiscal year 2022, Wichita State reported R&D expenditures totaling $261 million, up from $192 million in 2021. Industry-funded R&D expenditures totaled $116.3 million, up from $86 million in 2021.

“We're thrilled to see our focused efforts around research elevate our standing with the National Science Foundation,” said Wichita State President Rick Muma. “This achievement is no accident. Rather, it's the result of the concerted, willful and strategic contributions of the entire Wichita State community. Together, we're shaping a university that serves our community, our state, and the country through impactful, problem-solving research to address the challenges of our world.”

Wichita State also moved up seven places to No. 13 on the list of top universities in total engineering and research and development. For fiscal year 2022, Wichita State reported engineering R&D total expenditures of $226 million, up from $157 million in 2021 and $134 million in 2020.

Wichita State ranks third in all funds for aerospace engineering R&D with $219.7 million. WSU maintains its top ranking for industry-funded aerospace R&D at $115 million.

New Biomed building design is out and it is definitely making a statement!

The first building is 8 stories and 350,000 square feet.

Maybe a stretch but the project is about $100m short with KU schools of Internal medicine and Psychiatry staying on 9th street. Wonder if KU couldn’t provide all of the required funding. Fund raising continues in order to build the 2nd phase.
Curious comment by KU Minns “working through culture differences”, and “ we’re still friends.” Obviously, but why state it.

3,000 students and 200 faculty is certainly going to require ease of parking. Students can’t waste time looking for a parking spot. It needs to be convenient and close
Any plans call for a parking structure?

There is a parking garage directly north and east of the new building. However these will be students with no NIL deal so not all will have new cars
