The storms building up are moving west. Weird.

Saturday's storm moved NW. Can't remember if the other time was last week or the week before. Definitely wasn't Friday as I left work early since I was on the bike and it was hitting west Wichita just after 3pm.

Either way, it's been odd to see more westward movements.

Rain is coming down pretty good right now. Glad I didn't ride today, but that was because the forecast was showing rain starting around 4pm, not 145.

I work near Harry and West and it's an absolute downpour right now and has been for about 10 minutes

              Pea sized hail as well.

Stagnant summer like weather pattern with absolutely zero upper level prevailing winds. So you get these cut off upper lows that just meander around erratically until the jet stream dips in and kicks them out. Not too unusual to have weird western movement in July and August with stagnant summer patterns but in May and June for such a long duration? Very much so. Also plays into why we just don’t have much organized widespread severe weather anymore. I’m not climate change guy, but the last 5-7 years have been weird.

                    It's River Festival. It's raining.

I say we bring riverfest back again maybe mid July and then again (definitely) late August.

If we really need it, we have one late in the fall, too.

                      Perfect.

One of the dumbest moves they made. And the excuse to move it was even worse. Because it rains too much in May? lol really?

The only thing moving it to June did was keep the same rain chances but now adding summer humidity and a beating powerful June sun angle to the equation. Its original dates were perfect. Never stopped the best attendance it ever had from showing up.

                      • I'm assuming nothing actually touched down this weekend. I know there were reports of rotation and scary hooks showing on radar, but I haven't heard of anything. Obviously nothing hit anything if it did, but I'm just curious if there was anything in the area that I missed?

I know the sirens went off in the area. I woke up around 1130pm and heard them (they didn't wake me) and am pretty sure had it been an actual tornado event to hit my town, I'd probably be dead. Someone told me the sirens went off for 10-15 minutes. They were off in maybe 2 after I woke. I was too busy getting my wits about me and trying to get my two dogs to the car and over to my mothers house who actually has a basement. I turned the TV on as I was getting dressed and shoes on and all I remember hearing was hook and Benton so I was in a hurry to get out of the house, which may not have been the smartest idea considering the timing.

Thankfully nothing happened other than high winds and lots of tree damage around town.

I was oblivious to any severe weather threat prior to waking up. Guess I need to pay better attention. Or was this something that developed late and wasn't really on the radar throughout the day?

                        • Enhanced Risk of Severe Weather tonight. Main threat is straight line wind, lesser extent is large hail, could be a tornado somewhere in Western/Southern Kansas as the storm tracks across. Possible Derecho type event.

Seems like a good one to describe a bathroom event and warn others of entry for a reasonable period.

A derecho (/dəˈreɪtʃoʊ/, from Spanish: derecho [deˈɾetʃo], 'straight')[1] is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm that is associated with a fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms known as a mesoscale convective system.[2]

Derechos can cause hurricanic and tornadic level winds, heavy rains, and flash floods. I
