Nobody can sing a ballad like Sarah McLachlan.

Aretha Franklin has to be way way way up there. She's a legend.

A truly excellent artist has to scare you at times. Go places you would have never thought to visit. The notes are there for us all. Surprise me.

In the last month, I put Adele's, well received, 21 album into my regular listening rotation. It's nice to hear, but I can't take these English Soul Singers seriously. It's not them, it's me. It is like hearing Madonna speak with a British accent. Wildly inauthentic. Not their fault, but damn that singing comes from somewhere.... and it ain't England.

      Good topic, btw.

I'll cast another vote for Celine Dion. I also was kind of partial to Anne Murray in her day. And if you liked the Mo-Town sound you gotta give it up for Diana Ross.

If you want to way back then Judy Garland could sing a little also.

However, perhaps the best set of god-given female pipes may have very well belonged to Patsy Cline.

There are a boat-load of talented female vocalists.

And if you want to listen to God Bless America was there anyone better than Kate Smith.

Thanks for your thoughts; but come on.

Aretha…she is in a different category, in my judgment, meaning best overall regardless.

Adele I will look up but I also like KT Tunstall. - big talent.

Yeah, if you haven't already, give Adele a shot. She's definitely talented and has some hits, but by my calculation she's not even near the pantheon. BUT she is contemporary. That said, she gets credit for having an album that is an album. Few artists take listeners on a journey these days. Having been married for quite a few years now, I'm well over the notions/emotions of break-ups, but I still appreciated revisiting her take on the subject.

That's the nice thing about this kind of topic though. There are no wrong answers at the individual level. It's all a matter of personal preference and taste.

I only asked because I was messing around a week ago, and found a set of disks and tapes. The Violent Femmes, the Dead Kennedy’s, and every disk from 10,000 Maniacs – that is the style I liked 20 years ago I was partial to alternative music.

Merchant has a voice I could never get out of my head – good lyrics;strong vocals.

                            This I thought was nice:

Good know her voice is still around.
