  • Shocks vs Texas Pan American

The Shocks have played an exhibition against the Central Oklahoma Bronchos (and no that is not a typo), the Santa Clara Broncos and Sunday, they will host the Texax Pan-American Broncs.

This might be a record playing 3 teams named the Broncos or some variation thereof. (We also played the Wyoming Cowgirls).

No doubt just a coincidence although after the way we played against UC Davis maybe we should think about replacing our Women's BB program with rodeo.

Texas Pan-Am comes in with a 7-6 record and a 259 RPI for a 2:00 pm game on Sunday. The Shocks have an RPI of 230.

They lost by 50 to OU and 53 to Texas. They have 4 D-1 wins against teams with a combined record of 6-28 and an average RPI of 299. The other three wins are against non-DI opponents Our Lady of the Lake, Texas A&M Kingsville and Texas A&M International.

TPA is a junior dominated team (7 of 12 team members are juniors).

They are scoring 72.1 PPG led by 5'5" So. Guard Bianca Torre and 6'0" Jr. Guard CeMonay Newell. Between them these ladies are averaging 16 three-point attemtps per game hitting a very good 45.6%. As a team they put up 20 treys per game hitting 45.1%. They shoot 39.6% from inside the arc.

They turn the ball over an average of 20 times per game.

They do have a 6'7" freshman center who has only played 29 minutes on the season so she is obviously a project, although she no doubt will standout during warmups.

I will be real disappointed if the Shocks don't come out with great tenacity and intensity after laying the proverbial egg against UC Davis. Hopefully, they do that and show they can play some good, fundamentally sound, smart, team basketball.

    From Jody's Twitter page:

Last day of preperation for UTPA.... We have had some players really step up after the UC Davis game! I love to see that fight!
Let's hope that along with some solid, fundamental basketball carries over to the game itself.

      both

The Shocks with a very nice bounce back effort today as they pounded the Texas Pan American Broncs 95-55.

At the top of the list in my view was the unselfish team oriented play that resulted in putting 6 players in double figures plus a 7 with 9 points. The Shocks had 24 assists on 37 baskets and held their turnovers to a reasonable 17 while forcing TPA into 26 turnvovers.

Morgan Boyd led the scoring parade with 20 points on only 9 shots in 17 minutes of play so her Prouty rating is no doubt going to be quite high for this game.

Haleigh Lankster found herself in foul trouble in the 1st half (both of which were pretty ticky-tack calls). She still managed 15 points on only 8 shots in only 14 minutes of time. It was nice to see her teammates pick her up and build the big halftime lead with Haleigh on the bench with two fouls.

Shannika Bryant had a coming out party as she looked pretty solid in a 10 point, 4 rebound effort in 15 minutes off the bench.

Michelle Price (11), Heather Robben (10) and Alicia Sanchez (10) rounded out the double-figure scoring while Breanna Dawkins chipped in 9 points.

The only players that had difficult nights scoring were Chynna (1-5) and Jessica (0-3).

We had a few defensive breakdowns here and there but overall it was a huge improvement from the UC Davis game. Hopefully, a lesson has been taught, learned and will be retained. We will get a better measure of that next Wednesday in our final nonconference game on the raod against a good Central Michigan team.

This was the first game where it appeared that she "belonged" out there, looking somewhat lost in other appearances. (But she *is* a freshman.) She played with some confidence and provided a strong inside presence.

I believe Shannika's first two points came on her first two free throw attempts. She hit them dead center and showed very nice form and touch. Perhaps that gave her a little confidence.
