  • Women's Indoor Track thread

Thought I'd get this started since the T&F teams have their annual Intersquad Meet Friday in the Heskett Center. If you're on campus for the women's or men's bball games you should swing by the Heskett between games to check out this year's teams.

One of the hidden gems of the athletic department and one of the main reasons WSU has been so successful in winning the all-sports trophies recently is the track teams. They have 6 home meets this year so lots of opportunities to see them!

The women are coming off winning the indoor and and finishing 2nd at the outdoor MVC championships. They finished 2nd outdoor to SIU who placed 8th at the NCAA Championships. I think the women are going to be better than last year so it should be quite a battle. Check out the crew Friday!

The Lady Shox had a big opening season win at home scoring 186 points to easily beat Sam Houston (113), Oral Roberts (90), and Emporia State (88). Lots of nice performances, here are some of the top highlights .....

-Audacia Moore started out fast and kept going running to a near PR of 7.47 in the 60m. She appears on top of her game already - one of the best sprinters in the nation!
-Danielle Walker looked very good in winning wire to wire in the 1000m (2:56) ahead of improved teammate Jennifer Taylor (2:59).
-All-American Tonya Nero had 2 impressive wins in shorter races for her. She won the mile (4:56) and 800m (2:15) rather easily.
-The 4x4 team ran very well with a 3:48 to take the win. Thats a fast early season time.
-Freshman J'Lynn Ledesma (HJ 5-5) and Cassie Craig (PV 12-7) swept the vertical jumps while La'Taish Brown (LJ 19-9) added a victory as well.
-Freshman Emily Cook had a nice debut as well with 44-5 in the SP. and 45-10 in the Weight.

Next week will be a good test for the Lady Shox at Nebraska against the Huskers, Alabama, Missouri, Houston, and Air Force. This team looks good again this year, nice job Shockers!

Very nice performance by our Lady Shockers at Nebraska ...

      Team Scores: #12 Nebraska 190, Wichita St 115, Houston 68, Missouri 57, Alabama 56, Air Force 38.

Overall losing to Nebraska was nothing to be ashamed of and the domination over an SEC and Big 12 school was very impressive. Houston is always one of the top C-USA teams year in and year out as well. This team looks like it will be pretty good this year and I think it'll be a 2-team battle for the MVC with Southern Illinois.

Here are some of the top performances from Nebraska ...
-Audacia Moore with another big meet, 24.13 200m, school record and a convincing win over an all-American from Houston.
-Dynamic duo of Tonya Nero and Aliphine Tuliamuk dominate the field and both run around 9:30 - both ranked top-10 in the NCAA. Everyone needs to come out to the next meet and watch these girls run!
-4x4 team of Hallman, Audacia Moore, Kiara Moore, and J.Taylor run 3:44 to break the school record!
-Jen Taylor big PR of 2:12 in the 800m for 2nd overall from the slow heat.
-Cassie Craig and Katie Gillmore both clear 12-3 in the PV.
-5k crews sweeps 1-2-3 with Leah Thompson easily winning in 17:22.

Shocks have the upcoming weekend off before hosting the Shocker Quad Feb 4-5 with UT-Arlington coming. Another nice meet for the ladies! Nice job!

Thanks FlyingMoose! Of course Saturday. :)

The women's team had another impressive showing and with 3 weeks to go look to probably be the favorites heading into the MVC Indoor Championships.

              This weekend's highlights ...
-Lady Shocks easily dispatch UT-Arlington, Doane, and Butler in the team scoring.
-Another big meet for Audacia Moore. She won 3 events (55m, 200m, triple jump) and finished 2nd in another (Long Jump). School record 6.92 in the not-often ran 55m, 24.30 in the 200 put her top 20 in the NCAA and 39-9 in her first TJ of the season. She finished behind La'Taish Brown in the LJ. Brown jumped over 20 ft for the first time this year as well!
-The new "dynamic duo" of women's distance runners went 1-2 in the mile. Tonya Nero ran a top-15 NCAA time of 4:46 while newcomers Aliphine Tuliamuk ran 4:53 in her first mile of the season. Keep in mind these ladies are 5k and 10k specialists so for them to show this much speed should bode well for some incredible times during the outdoor season!
-Vastly improved Jennifer Taylor won a close battle in the 800 in 2:12.02.
-Shockers go 1-2-3 in the 3k as well with Leah Thompson winning an event for the 2nd meet in a row.
-Hurdlers go 1-2-3 with Samantha Hallman winning the 55m hurdles in 8.09.
-4x4 team stays unbeaten in the first 3 weeks with a 3:49 (without Audacia).
-Frosh J'lynn Ledesma wins the HJ in 5-6.
-Vaulters Cassie Craig and Amy Hough both clear 13ft to tie for first in the PV. Big PR for Hough!
-In their first multi-event of the season, Sarah Gilbert leads a strong showing scoring 3531 pts to win the event.

Next week the Shocks split up with the runners heading to Iowa State for the huge Iowa State Classic while the field event athletes go to Air Force.

WICHITA -- The Wichita State University men's track & field team climbed up nine spots in the regional rankings, the most in the nation, while the women's team moved up six slots and is now in the top-five as the United State Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its national and regional rankings on Tuesday, Feb. 8.

The women moved up six spots in the regional rankings as the Shockers remained unbeaten on the women's side at home. WSU now sits fifth in the Midwest region, ahead of neighbors Kansas (7th) and Kansas State (9th) as well as Missouri Valley foes Southern Illinois (6th) and Northern Iowa (14th). The Shockers were originally listed 11th in the Midwest.
Question for goshox74: Have we ever been this highly ranked in the region for women's indoor track?

These regional rankings are fairly new, I believe last year was the first year they started doing them so this is probably the highest ranking. About 5 years ago WSU finished 5th in the NCAA Midwest Regional meet which is different (and more difficult) than this current hypothetical ranking (there isn't a NCAA Regional anymore). Even though it shows WSU has a strong team again this year and worthy of some attention, being ranked ahead of KU, KSU and many of the Big 12 is fairly commonplace for them. WSU always has better all-around teams but sometimes lacks the blue-chippers the Big 12 gets. However this group of ladies is star studded and can make some waves on the national level.

Not sure most of the general public really gets how good the T&F program is around here. Thanks for posting the link to that story! Congrats and keep up the good work!

Muy impressive performance by the Shocker Ladies in the DMR at Iowa State

AMES, Ia. / COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. -- The team of Danielle Walker, Audacia Moore, Jennifer Taylor and Tonya Nero set a new Wichita State University distance medley relay record of 11:27.35 as the Shockers were in action at both the Iowa State Classic and the Air Force Invitational on Friday, Feb. 11.

The team of Danielle Walker, Audacia Moore, Jennifer Taylor and Tonya Nero set a new Wichita State University distance medley relay record of 11:27.35 as the Shockers were in action at the Iowa State Classic...

The DMR group broke the two-year old record set in 2009 by more than four seconds. The Shockers led the 15-team field in the event with the University of Mary squad the next finisher, more than 13 seconds behind WSU. This was the first distance medley run by Wichita State this season.
                    :good: :goshocks:

That site has great information regarding best times around the country and by conference. It helps me gauge where we can score in the Valley meets.

That DMR was special, and I have a feeling that we haven't reached the ceiling just yet. The women's team is going to be very special this year.

It doesn't get a lot of coverage, but the youtube Shocker channel has great 4-5 minute interviews with Bolt that gives insight to the upcoming meets.

Well worth the time to subscribe if you ask me.

Don't be surprised if Tonya Nero and/or Aliphine Tuliamuk bring home quite a bit of distance running hardware before the season is over.

Ok friends, the distance runners are special.

AMES, Ia./COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. -- The Wichita State University track & field team set four new records with Aliphine Tuliamuk, Tonya Nero and Dylan Hartnett etching their names in Shocker history following day two of the Iowa State Classic and Air Force Invitational.

Tonya Nero took dropped her PR in the 5k by 38 seconds from last season, beating the school record by 10 seconds.

Only problem is that transfer Aliphine Tuliamuk beat her by another 10 seconds in a spectacular time of 15:51. Both ladies auto qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships (and now rank top 5 in the nation) and with the possibility that they can work together as teammates, give WSU a real chance a national championship here, imho.

The Shocker Lady Tracksters certainly deserve some kudos and probably a lot more attention and press than they are getting.

Along with the Shocker Volleyball program they represent the very best of Shocker female student-athletes and they have made huge contriubutions to the Shocks All-Sports Championships.

Thanks for the links and info!

What a weekend for the Lady Shockers at Iowa State! As WuDrWu mentioned MAJOR, MAJOR 5k performances by Wichita State with Aliphine Tuliamuke and Tonya Nero running 15:51 and 16:01 to both automatically qualify for the NCAA. If both being ranked near the top of the NCAA doesn't put it into perspective for you just know that there are rarely two BOYS in Kansas that run that fast in the state high school cross country championships every year. You are right, these are some truly special distance runners. Luckily WSU has 3 home meets - I hope the general public comes out to see them perform during the outdoor season because - believe it or not - they are BETTER at the 10k than the 5k!!!

The women's relays at Iowa State were special as well with the DMR absolutely dominating the field with a time that #16 in the NCAA (and school record) and not to be outdone the 4x400 relay team set their 2nd school record of the year with a 3:43.

So many terrific performances to mention here without looking through all the results but here's another link to check out ... http://www.tfrrs.org

It is the "official" website for NCAA track results, much of it is the same as directathletics but there are a few more ways to search for results. You can find the MVC lists here as well. The Lady Shockers still appear to be a heavy favorite to defend their MVC indoor title as #11 SIU is slipping farther back every week.

1972 Shocker, I think you are right and it would be great it they got some more press. Do you think a sound beating of the #11 team in the NCAA would justify that in 2 weeks? Haha! Although the ranking is a "National" ranking based on how a team does at the NCAA meet it still will sound pretty good.

I've seen some other rankings that are more "team based" that measures an all-around strength of teams and the WSU women were right around 25th last week. I'm sure after the Iowa State/Air Force meets they may jump into the top-20. Thats a more accurate measure of how this team stacks up as a "team".

Anyways, terrific job WSU Lady Shocks! Keep it rolling!!!

As always thanks for the insight '74. Can you say if my comment on a potential championship for one of the ladies is the out of bounds raving of an all too enthusiastic fan or a real possibility?
