  • MVC WBB Results

The Shocks, of course, missed a very good opportunity to knock of a BCS team in their heartbreaking loss to Arizona.

Illinois State "may" have the best win of the year with a 69-62 win on the road at Illinois. Not sure how good Illinois is. One danger in WBB is assuming that the Women are good just because their Men are good. Illinois had an RPI of 249 last year and finished at 7-20.

Last night the MVC lost all three games to good opponents:

Drake lost 64-46 to #17 Iowa State in Ames. That is probably about what you would expect.

DePaul defeated MVC favorite MSU 82-66 on MSU's home court. DePaul is supposed to be pretty solid and they are a very experienced group including three 5th year seniors. They are expected to finish in the top half of the Big East (6th out of 16 teams).

Creighton fell on the road to Bowling Green 79-53. Bowling Green is decent having won the last six MAC regular season titles. Still I would expect the team picked #3 in teh MVC to be more competitive in this game. Evansville beat BG at home 63-62 after starting the game on a
    16-0 run.

Creighton has not been very impressive early on and may be having trouble filling he void left by the departure of 4 seniors including point guard Chevelle Herring and All-Conference 1st teamer Megan Neuvirth.
The Bluejays defeated Liberty in a very low scoring (40-35) nuetral court game, lost by 13 at North Carolina State (2009-10 RPI of 202) and now the 26 point loss to BG.

    A couple of early indications:

    1. The MVC will continue to be a 1-Bid conference. Therefore, winning the post-season MVC tournament is the route to the NCAA touranment.

    2. Creighton might be a team that the Shocks can move ahead of this year although we have not had a lot of success against the BlueJays in recent years.

If you want to see what the top level of NCAA WBB looks like #1 UConn and #2 Baylor are on ESPN2 this evening at 5:00 pm CST.

UConn has a 79 game winning streak.

Few teams can match up with Baylor's 6'8" Brittney Griner including UConn.

Update: UConn hangs on for a 65-64 win after overcomning an 8-point deficit with in the last six minutes. Win streak reaches 80.

A couple of more bad losses for the MVC:

#22 Iowa 91 - Bradley 53. You expect the Braves to lose this one but the 38 point margin is painful.

Tennessee State 57 - SIU 43. SIU previously lost 62-50 to Tennessee-Martin. Not a good start at all for the Salukis.

        Wednesday, November 17th:

UNI 70, SE Missouri 57 at SEMO

Evansville 60, Murray State 54 at Evansville

K-State 64, Indiana State 48 in Manhattan. K-State lead 45-40 with 5 minutes left then put the game away with a 13-0 run.

No real surprises. K-State and KU should be playing the Lady Shocks in WBB and VB every year on a home-and-home basis irrespective of their men's teams avoidance of the Shocks. I'm confident they would draw some of the best crowds of the year when in Wichita. Split the gate on these games and matches if need be.

          Friday, November 19th:

Illinois thumps Bradley 73-51 in Peoria. The Illini lost to Illinois State at home 69-62 a week ago.

SIU loses to Northern Illinois at home 46-45 to drop to 0-3 on the year. Apparently NIU hit a half-court 3-pointer at the buzzer for the win.

The Valley is now 13-12 after starting an 8-2 start.

            Saturday, November 20th:

MVC goes 4-1 including the Shocks 65-59 home win over George Mason.

            Elsehwere:

Casey Garrison's 32 points leads MSU to a nice 73-69 road win at Toledo.

Illinois State handles SIU-Edwardsville 68-57 at home. This is the team the Shocks drilled by 26 on the road this past week.

Creighton 60 - Wyoming 49 in Omaha. Shocks might face Wyoming next Saturday in the Cal State-Northridge Tournament. It will be either Wyoming or Chattanooga.

Ball State over Evansville 61-58 in Muncie.

            MVC now at 17-13.

              Sunday, November 21st:

UNI fell to #17 Iowa State by a score of 69-59 in a game that was pretty close throughout. UNI led 33-30 at the half. ISU took the lead for good at around the 13:30 mark of the game (having been in the lead only once early in the 1st half). ISU stretched its lead to 8 at the 2:52 mark. UNI closed to within 4 at the 1:22 mark, but ISU made 8 out of 8 free throws thereafter to close out the game.

One of the better performances by an MVC team so far this year.

MVC now 17-14 in the preseason.

                Monday, November 22nd:

Bradley picked up a road win at Eastern Illinois 77-72. Eastern Illinois lost to Illinois State in Normal by 31 a few days ago. Eastern Illinois is 1-3 with its only win over Missouri about a week ago 81-73.

Indiana State lost at home to Michigan 63-58. Not sure how good Michigan is this year. Probably botton half of the Big 10.

                MVC now 18-15.

                  Wednesday, November 24th:

2 road losses for the Valley tonight.

SIU falls 52-56 at Western Michiganto drop to 0-4. Jody's former boss, Dana Eikenberg, appears to have left a mess at SIU. However, SIU supposedly has the 37th ranked recruiting class coming in. Looks like they are about where the Shocks were in Jody's 1st year.

Illinois State loses 70-73 to South Dakota State. Don't know much about SDSU, but I thought ILS had been playing decent ball.

                  MVC drops to 18-17.

Bad news: one bid league for sure.

Good news: we have as good a chance as anyone to be that one bid.

Agreed. The MVC regular season is for positioning your team for a good seed in the NIT or WBI Tournaments in case you are unable to win the auto bid.

Sure would be great to have the Shocks in the NCAA Tournament at IBA this year.

                          Saturday, November 27th:

Wyoming 63 - WSU - 55 in the Cal St Northridge Tournament. Poor shooting dooms the Shocks.

New Mexico State 72 - UNI 63 in Las Cruces.

Evansville 77 - Eastern Washington 67 in Boulder.

Missouri State 62 - LA Tech 53 in Springfield.

Drake 67 - Northern Arizona 52 in Flagstaff.

Arizona 82 - Bradley 59 in Cancun, Mexico. Arizona, who defeated the Shocks in OT a couple of weeks ago, open a can on Bradley.

                          MVC moves to 26-21.

Florida International drilled Indiana State 68-47 in Miami.

                              Tuesday, November 30th:

ORU 75 - MSU 66 in Springfield. ORU is not a bad team, but probably what did the Bears in was that Valley POY Casey Garrison went down midway through the 1st half with a sprained ankle and did not return. Hopefully, the injury won't keep Casey on the shelf for too long.

Drake 87 - North Texas 67 in Des Moines

                              Wednesday, December 1st:

                              Bradley 72 - Wisconsin-Milwaukee 70 in Milwaukee.

DePaul 100 - Illinois State 83 in Chicago. DePaul is a very solid team.

                              MVC now 30-24
