  • Shocks vs Arizona (Chili Cook-Off - Free Tickets)

The Shocks with one of their tougher season openers in many years.

I guess the connection is that Arizona Head Coach Niya Butts is a former Tennessee Vol. Shocks will play at Arizona next year.

Another connection I was unaware of -- Chance Lindley is on the Arizona Coaching staff. Chance has been pretty successful in his early years as a Coach in the women's game as he keeps moving up.

He's been pretty successful at other things too.

The Wildcats are picked seventh preseason in the Pac-10 after finishing eighth last year. The Pac-10 is not a particularly strong WBB conference, but of course much stronger than the MVC.

Good for Chance. He was outstanding at Collegiate.

I'll never forget the first game I saw him play.

Did he coach at Collegiate? I know he didn't play there...

Yes. I think he was there 4 years, undefeated State Champs his last year.

His record there was stunning.....maybe like 110-12 in 4 seasons...something like that.

I was talking about seeing him play at Sunrise. I didn't know anything about him, except that he scored a lot. I was trying to identify which player was Chance (their team was a LOT better than I expected) when it became clear that Chance was the kid that never missed.

I think he was something along the lines of 17-18 at the half. They pulled him midway through the 3rd and he had about 45 and had missed 2 shots.

The other team was not all that bad.

I saw him play against my brother at Circle one year. He could definitely shoot but we all felt Sunrise would have been better if they utilitzed the rest of the team more. Most of the offense was having everyone screen for him and let him shoot. But he could shoot. I think he had around 30 but Circle won by about 25. I was impressed though. Don't know what his numbers were and he hit a few meaningless three's at the end.

They also return last season's Pac-10 freshman of the year. Plus, whatever you think of the Pac-10 as a whole, playing the Stanford women every year means that Pac-10 schools won't be easily intimidated.

The Coaches picked them 7th, the media picks them 6th.

They also return 6'2" Ify Ibekwe who was last year's Pac-10 Defensive POY and who has been named to the Naismith Trophy preseason watch list this year.

Ify looks like she is built pretty similar to Jasmine Gordon.

Arizona made 19 of 38 three pointers (50%) and 38 of 48 free throws (79.2%) in their two exhibition games and scored a total of 199 points.

Shocks will definitely have to step it up on the defensive end of the floor and we need to do so without excessive fouling.

A chili cookoff and tailgate party begins at 5:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12 outside Koch Arena before the women's basketball game against Arizona.

Great chili weather although sounds like we are in for a rainy day tomorrow. Hopefully, they have a tent set up or some options for moving inside if necessary.

BTW, this is free and open to the public.

UPDATE: I checked with the Alumni Association to see how this event might be impacted by the rainy weather being forecasted. They are looking into what options they may have to move it indoors. If that can't be worked out they probably will cancel the event. Stay tuned.

I got tickets to go to the game tonite from kgso and really would like the chili cookoff to still be held. I'll tell you all up front that I have never been a big womens bb fan but I am looking forward to tonites game. Go Shox.

I hope we get a good, competitive game, although this is not one that I am expecting the Lady Shockers to win.

Arizona has a couple of very good players in 6'2" Sr. Iffy Ibekwe (reigning PAC-10 Defensiver POY) and 5'11" So. guard Davellyn Whyte (last year's PAC-10 Freshman of the Year). 5'11" us good size for a guard in WBB.

I would be satisfied if the Shocks stay within 6-8 points of the Wildcats.

The Shocks are capable of pulling the upset, but they are still pretty inexperienced at the D-1 level with Haleigh having 2 years experience and Morgan, Jessica, Chynna, Jasmine and Michelle 1 year each. Alicia and Heather add JUCO experience to the mix plus Alicia was in the program last year but DNP.

You never know what will actually happen when they play the game though. With the Chili Cook-Off before the game the atmosphere in Koch Arena could get interesting especially in the 2nd half.

                              :goshocks:
