  • Shocks 69 - Bradley 55

The Lady Shocks finished off a very good home stand to start the MVC race off on the right foot.

Today it was the bench, in particular Jessica Diamond and Michelle Price, that bailed the Shocks out of foul trouble in the 1st half. Michelle filled in especially well in the 1st half after being MIA most of the season so far. She was energetic and did not back down an inch against the bigs of Bradley. Hopefully, this will prove to be a breakout game for Michelle.

While Michelle's good play continued in the 2nd half, Jessica pretty much took over the game offensively in the 2nd half after Bradley had made an early run to retake the lead. Jessica finished with a carreer high 22 points and looked very sharp doing it.

The thing I liked about Jessica's game is that she really wasn't hunting her shot. She got most everything in the flow of the game. Once she got going she did not force the issue. Also made a very nice assist to Jazimen for a layup as the Shocks were pulling away in the 2nd half.

Speaking of assists, how about 12 from Marisah vs only 3 turnovers. That gives Marisah 20 assists vs 5 turnovers in the last 2 games. That will win you a lot of ball games.

Haleigh, Sheena and Jazimen all had solid games as well.

Shocker defense was for the most part very good also.

Shockers were out-rebounded by 10, but a lot of that was early. Once Michelle entered the game things seemed to even out a little as Michelle was very physical and aggressive on the boards (although she was not foul prone in the process). Shocks countered that rebounding advantage by committing only 9 turnovers to 19 for Bradley.

A real nice effort by the Shocks against a physical Bradley team.

Next up: A really tough road trip to Creighton and Drake next Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Creighton was the preseason pick to win the MVC and Drake was picked to finish 3rd. This should be a real challenge for this young Shocker team. It will be interesting to see how they respond.

    :good: :goshocks:

I deferred, knowing you would put together a far better report than I would - and I was right!

On Thursday, we were only getting contributions from five players and Coach decided to ride them all the way to the finish line in the second half. Today, we were getting help from eight players, and Coach got good minutes from all of them in the second half. And your observations about Michelle are spot on. If she wasn't getting a rebound, she was often keeping it alive.

Again our athleticism seemed to wear down the opposition in the second half.

The victories themselves will turn some heads in the Valley, but I think the margins of victory will turn even more heads.

Anybody know the WSU women's record for assists in a game? I don't think there's been a player in recent years that has been getting as many assists as Marisah has.

The single game assist record is 16 by Jackie Wilson in 1983 against UMKC. The career record for assists is 476 by Kathy Garofolo (1978-1982) and single season is 206 by Garofolo in 1981-82.

Last season Marisah had 205 assists, one short of the single season record. She has 77 so far this season, which is a lower average than last year (in part because we don't need her to play quite as many minutes), but she still have over 350 career assists in only two seasons.

In the Bradley game the Shocker bench scored 37 and the starters scored 32. Gotta love that kind of production. Won't get that every game obviously but it is darn nice to have that kind of potential firepower coming off the bench.

Yes, the final margins will raise some eyebrows but both games were much tighter than the final scores might suggest.

The UNI game as a 3 point game with 5:30 to go before the Shocks pulled away. There were 12 ties and 23 lead changes in that game.

The Bradley game was close for about 28 minutes at which point the Shocks expanded a 4 point lead to 16 with a 20-8 run over the next 8 minutes and were pretty much in full control over the final 10 minutes of the game.

As you commented in your post, the Shocks active and tough defense seemed to wear down the opponents. I think that tough defense will have to be the cornerstone of this team this year.

Hadn't had a chance to make a game in awhile, glad I made it out to this one. Finally looked like we have an offense. Also thought it was a very well officiated game, one of the better jobs I've seen at a WSU women's game in my opinion.

You are correct, and I understand your comment. I guess I was impressed that we could pull away in the second half in hard-fought games. We did not take command of these games from the tip-off, but we did not pad the score with late free throws either.

We are making progress more quickly than I anticipated. These games were not close to being victories in previous years. Kudos to the players and coaches!
