The Lady Shocks finished off a very good home stand to start the MVC race off on the right foot.
Today it was the bench, in particular Jessica Diamond and Michelle Price, that bailed the Shocks out of foul trouble in the 1st half. Michelle filled in especially well in the 1st half after being MIA most of the season so far. She was energetic and did not back down an inch against the bigs of Bradley. Hopefully, this will prove to be a breakout game for Michelle.
While Michelle's good play continued in the 2nd half, Jessica pretty much took over the game offensively in the 2nd half after Bradley had made an early run to retake the lead. Jessica finished with a carreer high 22 points and looked very sharp doing it.
The thing I liked about Jessica's game is that she really wasn't hunting her shot. She got most everything in the flow of the game. Once she got going she did not force the issue. Also made a very nice assist to Jazimen for a layup as the Shocks were pulling away in the 2nd half.
Speaking of assists, how about 12 from Marisah vs only 3 turnovers. That gives Marisah 20 assists vs 5 turnovers in the last 2 games. That will win you a lot of ball games.
Haleigh, Sheena and Jazimen all had solid games as well.
Shocker defense was for the most part very good also.
Shockers were out-rebounded by 10, but a lot of that was early. Once Michelle entered the game things seemed to even out a little as Michelle was very physical and aggressive on the boards (although she was not foul prone in the process). Shocks countered that rebounding advantage by committing only 9 turnovers to 19 for Bradley.
A real nice effort by the Shocks against a physical Bradley team.
Next up: A really tough road trip to Creighton and Drake next Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Creighton was the preseason pick to win the MVC and Drake was picked to finish 3rd. This should be a real challenge for this young Shocker team. It will be interesting to see how they respond.
