  • MVC Track Championships - Terre Haute, Indiana - This week!

Ok I know its been a rough spring lately with baseball and softball but the Lady Shockers should give WSU a boost at the Track Championships this week (Friday - Sunday).

Would love to hear others' thoughts.

SIU won the indoor title with the Shockers 11 points back. It appears WSU is better outdoor and should battle to win this meet.

The big hitters for WSU are:
Kellyn Johnson - word is she will run 1500, 5k, and make her season debut in the steeplechase. 30 points from her is needed and a probability although the Kenyan girl from Missouri State will be a threat in the 5k.

Audacia Moore - 100m, 200m, 4x1 - freshman ranked 1st in the 200 and 2nd in the 100 and on the 1st place ranked 4x1 team. Wouldn't be a stretch for her to win 3 titles, but even three top 2 finishes would be great.

Brittany Hemphill - 100m, 200m, 4x1, Long Jump - another freshman - hasn't had as good of outdoor season as she did indoor but could contend for big points as she was the indoor 200m champion. Not ranked real high in LJ so that could be a big lift for WSU if she can jump like she did indoors.

Danielle Walker, Hali Mobley, Olivia Martinez, Lauren Eck - These middle distance ladies need to rack up points in the 800 and 1500.

Irene Kosgei - Got 3rd at the MVC CC meet but struggled indoors. Will probably run 5k and 10k so could be a top 3 or 4 in both if she runs well.

400 hurdlers - mainly Emily Ballock and Samantha Hallman are in a battle with SIU for a lot of points. This event will be a big swing point in the meet on Sunday.

Erika Kovesi, Tish Brown - will rely on these 2 ladies for most of the points in the LJ, TJ, and HJ. Hopefully they will duplicate their indoor success and score in all 3 events.

Pole vaulters - Led by Brooke Demo this group scored 5 of the top 8 indoor. The Shockers need them to duplicate that effort.

Kate Schaake - will score most of the points for the throwers, ranked 3rd (Discus) and 4th (Shot). WSU will need her to break up the SIU throwers at least a little bit.

Obviously there are lots of others as WSU will take 32 girls to the meet. Every 6th, 7th, and 8th place point matters so the difference in close meets like this ultimately comes down to the above athletes scoring big and the "role players" getting in on the action as well.

Here we go.......the meet begins today with the multis and a few select events.

For the women the first 4 of the heptathlon (100H, HJ, SP, 200) at 12:30, the Javelin @ 4pm and 10k @ 7pm.

I don't think we have anyone competing in the hept, but even if we do it's unlikely they will score.

Hopefully the Javelin will showcase the depth of the team. Autumn Weaver, Monica Adcock and Stephanie Hammond all have a chance to at least score, even if they won't compete for top honors. Getting a point tie with SIU here would be a great start.

Kimber Lemon will look for the first of what should be several wins this weekend for the ladies but she will have her hands full with several talented and young challengers. A win is expected and would be a great way to cap day 1.

Edit: Selena Burns and Stephanie Hammond are entered in the decathlon. There are only about 12 entrants, so if we could get any points here that would be great.

Kimber Lemon also looks to get help from Irene Kosgei and Jenna Wood.....neither has times in the 10k this season but they should provide some protection for Kimber. Any points from those 2 in this full field of 17 would be a huge bonus.

Selena and Stephanie must be studettes if they can compete in the decathlon. :D

Just kidding. I know you meant heptathlon. I myself am in training for the decaf-lon.

Selena is having a great first day and stands 3rd with the 200 and that should be a good event for her.

Javelin results are in and its another good result for the Shocks!

Junior Monica Adcock with a career best throw takes 2nd, Autumn Weaver took 6th and Stephanie Hammond took 7th. 13 points for the ladies in event #1.

Ugh.....not so good in the 10k....something must have happened to Kimber Lemon as she finished more than 4 minutes off her season best time. Hopefully she is ok.

Irene Kosgei stepped up and finished 3rd and saved some points for the Shocks. MSU's great distance runner Pasca Cheruiyot won by almost 1 minute in a sparkling time.

                            After 2 events scored:

                            1. WSU 19
                            2. UNI 17
                            3. IlSU 15
                            4. SIU 11
                            5. MSU 10
                            6. BU 4
                            7. DU 1
                            7. InSU 1

Selena Burns finished 4th in the heptathlon and Stephanie Hammond picked up an extra point in 8th spot.

                              Great job ladies!
