Ok I know its been a rough spring lately with baseball and softball but the Lady Shockers should give WSU a boost at the Track Championships this week (Friday - Sunday).
Would love to hear others' thoughts.
SIU won the indoor title with the Shockers 11 points back. It appears WSU is better outdoor and should battle to win this meet.
The big hitters for WSU are:
Kellyn Johnson - word is she will run 1500, 5k, and make her season debut in the steeplechase. 30 points from her is needed and a probability although the Kenyan girl from Missouri State will be a threat in the 5k.
Audacia Moore - 100m, 200m, 4x1 - freshman ranked 1st in the 200 and 2nd in the 100 and on the 1st place ranked 4x1 team. Wouldn't be a stretch for her to win 3 titles, but even three top 2 finishes would be great.
Brittany Hemphill - 100m, 200m, 4x1, Long Jump - another freshman - hasn't had as good of outdoor season as she did indoor but could contend for big points as she was the indoor 200m champion. Not ranked real high in LJ so that could be a big lift for WSU if she can jump like she did indoors.
Danielle Walker, Hali Mobley, Olivia Martinez, Lauren Eck - These middle distance ladies need to rack up points in the 800 and 1500.
Irene Kosgei - Got 3rd at the MVC CC meet but struggled indoors. Will probably run 5k and 10k so could be a top 3 or 4 in both if she runs well.
400 hurdlers - mainly Emily Ballock and Samantha Hallman are in a battle with SIU for a lot of points. This event will be a big swing point in the meet on Sunday.
Erika Kovesi, Tish Brown - will rely on these 2 ladies for most of the points in the LJ, TJ, and HJ. Hopefully they will duplicate their indoor success and score in all 3 events.
Pole vaulters - Led by Brooke Demo this group scored 5 of the top 8 indoor. The Shockers need them to duplicate that effort.
Kate Schaake - will score most of the points for the throwers, ranked 3rd (Discus) and 4th (Shot). WSU will need her to break up the SIU throwers at least a little bit.
Obviously there are lots of others as WSU will take 32 girls to the meet. Every 6th, 7th, and 8th place point matters so the difference in close meets like this ultimately comes down to the above athletes scoring big and the "role players" getting in on the action as well.
