  • Shocker SB at Tulsa Invitational

The Shockers conclude the tournament portion of their schedule with four games at the Tulsa Invitational. The Shocks will start their tournament play against Texas Tech at 3pm on Friday. On Saturday, the opponents are California at 9am and Montana at 130pm. Tulsa is the opponent at 115pm on Sunday. All of this with weather permitting as there is rain in the forecast.

Texas Tech are a preseason pick for sixth among the seven teams playing softball in the Big 12. The Red Raiders record is 12-9, playing at tournaments hosted by Texas State and Alabama, a tournament in Puerto Vallarta as well as their tournament that the Shocker played in last weekend. They have a win over 21 Fresno State and two losses to 10/10 Alabama. The leading hitters are Devon Thomey (OPS of 1.058), Jessica Hartwell (1.020 and four homers) and Raina O'Neal (.956 and six homers). The pitching they faced last weekend improved their offensive numbers. Kassidy Scott has almost half of the innings with an ERA of 2.44 and a WHIP of 1.33. Second in innings is Mattison Maisel with numbers of 5.58 and 1.80.

Cal are a preseason pick for sixth among nine teams in the Pac 12. They are currently ranked 23/19 and have a record of 15-3. They have a runs-ahead win over Oklahoma State. Leading hitters for the Golden Bears are Lindsay Rood (1.033), Jazmyn Jackson (1.002) and Kobie Pettis (1.000). The team only has two home runs to this point in the season. Zoe Conley (1.81 and 1.16) has started over half of the games. Far down the innings list (less than a third of Conley's total) is Stephanie Trzcinski whose numbers are 3.18 and 1.59.

Montana are picked for third among the eight teams in the Big Sky Conference. Their record is 7-12 and includes losses to Drake and Northern Iowa in the season-opening UNI Dome tournament. Offensive leaders for the Grizzlies are Delene Colburn (1.181 and five homers) and Bethany Olea (1.053). Four different pitchers have roughly the same number of innings. The staff ERA is 4.27 with a WHIP of 1.64.

Tulsa is the preseason pick to win the American Athletic Conference, just points ahead of South Florida. Their record is 11-9 with wins over Kansas and UT Arlington and a 1-0 loss to Oklahoma on Wednesday. The leading hitters are Julia Hollingsworth (1.022) and Morgan Neal (.938). Emily Watson has half of the innings in the circle. Her numbers are 1.91 and 1.07. Lexi Blevins and Haley Meinen complete the staff.

The Shockers record is now 11-7. Pull up a chair and let's go through the offensive numbers: Laurie (1.113 with four homers), Madison (1.055 and four homers), Paige (1.021 and four homers), Mackenzie (.980), Macklin (.959 and four homers), Mauriana (.942) and Kelli (.937). Of course, offense is not the current issue with the Shocks. Katie has two-thirds of the innings in the circle. Her numbers are 2.87 and 1.42. After that, there is no one at the moment. Jenni is still on her way back, and Bailey cannot seem to get anybody out recently. Her WHIP is now 1.84.

The Shockers get the run back in the third. A walk to Ashley, a fielder's choice/error moves her to third and another error scores her. Three errors already for TT.

          Tied 1-1 after three.

In the fourth, singles by Madison and McKenzieA and a stolen base get Shockers to second and third with one out, but two ground outs end the inning. With two outs, Texas Tech gets a walk, single and run-scoring double to take the lead. Jenni has given up five hits and four walks in her four innings.

            TT leads 2-1 after four.

In the bottom of the fifth, after an error and a walk, Katie comes on in relief of Jenni. This appears to be a standard change rather than one induced by pitch count.

Katie is greeted by a sac bunt and two-run single.

The Red Raiders increase their lead to 4-1 after five.

The Shockers manage to pull close in the top of the sixth. After singles by Macklin and McKenzieA, Cassidy delivers a pinch-hit two-out single to score one. A reliever yields back-to-back walks to Mackenzie and Kelli to score another, but Laurie ends the rally with a fly out.

In the seventh, an error and wild pitch get Macklin in scoring position, but the Shocks cannot push the tying run across.

                Shockers 3-4 Texas Tech

The Shockers only managed six hits, two each by Macklin and McKenzieA. Jenni gave up three earned runs on five hits and five walks in her four innings. Katie gave up one hit in her two innings of relief.

Unfortunately, that hit turned out to be the game winner.

Hadn't noticed that, but Yes. And for Katie, this was a pretty good relief outing.

                      Other Friday Games

                      Texas Tech 5-8 Montana
A four-run fourth gave the Grizzlies a 7-2 lead, enough to offset a later three-run homer by the Red Raiders. Both teams used three pitchers, by necessity more than design.

                      Montana 0-7 California
Trzcinski gave up her first hit with two outs in the sixth in her three-hit shutout. The Golden Bears broke the game open with six runs in the sixth.

                      California 0-4 Tulsa
The Golden Hurricane scored three in the first, and Emily Watson allowed only four hits and had nine strike outs.

                          Game Two

                          Montana v Shockers

Jenni has the start in this one. Same lineup as yesterday except for Mauriana as the DP.

The Shocks score in the first on a single by Kelli and double by Laurie.

Shocks lead 1-0 after two complete.

The Grizzlies take the lead in the third with two unearned runs: error, walk, two-out double.

                            Montana 2-1 after three.

In the Shocker fourth, singles by Laurie and Madison start a rally that is snuffed out by an inning-ending ground ball double play.

Montana adds another run in the fifth. With a runner on third, a walk and "keep on going to second" creates a double steal and the additional run.

                              Grizzlies lead 3-1 after five.
