    Other Friday Game

    UTEP 0-8(5) Texas Tech
This was a tight 2-0 game until UTEP brought on another pitcher to start the fifth. A third pitcher, three free passes, a couple of hits and three errors later, we have a runs-ahead game. Scott threw a two-hit shutout for the Red Raiders.

      Game Two

      Shockers at Texas Tech

Katie has the start in this game, and Mauriana is the DP. The lineup has been shuffled some, moving Mackenzie up and Paige down. Maisel is the starter for the Red Raiders.

Not a great start. Tech gets a leadoff double, single and advance on the throw, groundout and infield single to score two.

Texas Tech leads 2-0 after one.

In the second, Paige gets a leadoff double, but Ryleigh's two-out single is not enough to score her.

          Still 2-0 after two.

The Shocks get an unearned run in the third. Kelli singled, advanced on a groundout and scored on an outfield error on a ball hit by Macklin

Base running errors by the Red Raiders save the Shockers some runs in the bottom half. The leadoff hitter singles but the leaves early for the first out. Another single is followed by a triple (probably really a double), but the runner is thrown out at home for the second out. A walk, run-scoring double and walk score a run and Jenni is on to pitch. She hits her first batter to score a second run in the inning before getting the last out.

Texas Tech leads 4-1 after three.

In the fourth inning, Madison leads off with a double and Mauriana walks. The names of the runners change after a force out, but Mackenzie drives in two with a double.

Jenni is clearly rusty. She has a couple of walks, a wild pitch and gives up three hits. The Red Raiders score three more runs.

              7-3 Red Raiders.

Bailey comes on to start the fifth. With these particular LiveStats, it is not possible to get a pitch count for Jenni. She faced eleven batters, so she probably had about fifty pitches.

                Still 7-3 after five.

With two out and nobody on, the Shockers come roaring back in the top of the sixth. A walk to Ryleigh and singles by Ashley and Mackenzie load the bases. Kelli drives home one with another single. Then Laurie clears the bases with a double to tie the game, and the Red Raiders make a pitching change. Asea flies out as a pinch-hitter for Macklin to end the inning. Asea remains in the game to play first as Macklin has had two errors.

Bailey responds with a three-up, three-down bottom half of the sixth.

                  Tied 7-7 after six.

A big, late rally like this reminds me of some of last year's games.

The Shockers load the bases to start the seventh on a single by Paige, an error on a sac bunt by Madison and a walk to Morgan, pinch hitting for Mauriana. Ashley, nominally a slapper, delivers a fly ball deep enough that everybody moves up. Mackenzie follows with a double to score two more runs.

Shocker lead 10-7 as the game moves to the bottom of the seventh.

A walk, wild pitch and another walk to start the bottom half. Is this Bailey's to win or lose or does Katie come back to the circle?

I don't know. As you have pointed out Katie doesn't seem to do well in relief. But Bailey walks the 1st to batters in the bottom of the 7th which is just totally unacceptable.

However, Bailey responds nicely and closes out the inning without any runs scoring. Hopefully, this outing will be good for Bailey's confidence.

Great come back by the Lady Shocks.

Bailey gets three ground outs to close out the game.

                        Shockers 10-7 Texas Tech

Bailey pitches three innings in relief for the win, giving up one hit, two walks and getting two strikeouts. Mackenzie had two doubles among her three hits to drive in four runs. Kelli had three singles, and Paige had a double and a single. Laurie drove in three runs with her double. The Shockers had twelve hits in all.

The Shocks play the first two games tomorrow against UTEP and North Texas beginning at 1030am.

The game is over as I write this, of course, but I would have sent out there, telling her not to be looking over her shoulder. There is nobody in the bullpen. You have to try something to demonstrate some confidence in her.

I don't disagree. With hindsight, while you would prefer Bailey would be focused enough not to come out and immediately walk 2 to get the tying run to the plate with no outs, it had to be a big confidence booster for Bailey to work out of that self-created predicament with the game on the line. Next step in her development will be not to create that situation in the 1st place.

Bailey looks like she will be a decent pitcher for the Shocks once she develops a bit more consistent command of her pitches.

Good to see Jenni back in the circle although she, perhaps predictably wasn't real effective. She faced 11 batters allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits, 2 walks and a hit batter plus the Shocks committed an error behind her. Not sure bringing her into a bases-loaded situation was the most ideal thing to do but after hitting the 1st batter she faced to force in a run she did get out of that jam. But Jenni got her feet wet again and the Shocks won the game so it worked out okay in the end.

                              Game Three

                              Shockers v UTEP

Katie is in the circle for this one. Some lineup/position changes towards the bottom: Mackenzie-5, Kelli-7, Laurie-6, Paige-9, Madison-2, Macklin-DP, Asea-3, Mauriana-4, Ashley-8. Harrawood has the start for the Miners. She gave up two runs in four innings against Texas Tech yesterday.

The Shocks get two in the top of the first on a single by Mackenzie and a two-out homer by Paige. A single and wild pitch create a threat for UTEP, but the baserunner runs into a DP on a fly out.

                                Shockers 2-0 after one.
