The Shockers travel to Lubbock this weekend for their fourth tournament of the season. Besides host Texas Tech, other teams at the tournament are North Texas and UTEP.
The Shocks have games on Friday against North Texas at 130pm and Texas Tech at 630pm. Games Saturday are against UTEP at 1030am and North Texas at 1pm. The Sunday game is against UTEP at 1030am. The Shockers only see Texas Tech once this weekend but will see them again next weekend in Tulsa.
North Texas is a member of Conference USA where they are picked last among the twelve teams. Kelli Schkade was a pick for Preseason All-Conference Team. The current record for the Mean Green is 8-8, playing at tournaments hosted by Baylor and UNC-Wilmington as well one hosted by themselves. A split of a mid-week DH is also part of their record. One of their wins is over Baylor, currently ranked 22/22. North Texas was shutout twice by Arkansas who is RV/RV. Schkade and Lacy Gregory are the two hitters with an OPS greater than .900. Stacey Underwood with a WHIP of 1.16 and Lauren Craine whose WHIP is 1.47 are the primary pitchers. The opponents of the Mean Green have a better composite OPS and WHIP than they do.
Texas Tech is a preseason pick for sixth among the seven teams playing softball in the Big 12. The Red Raiders record is 8-7, playing at tournaments hosted by Texas State and Alabama as well as a tournament in Puerto Vallarta. They have a win over 21 Fresno State and two losses to 10/10 Alabama. Devon Thomey is the only hitter with a high OPS at 1.002. Raina O'Neal has five homers. Kassidy Scott has the most innings with an ERA of 2.38 and a WHIP of 1.19. Here also, the opponents have the better of OPS and WHIP.
UTEP is also a member of Conference USA and are picked in the middle of the pack at seventh. Courtney Clayton and Kaitlyn Ryder are picks on the Preseason All-Conference Team. The Miners record is 3-11, heading west for all three of their tournaments. They have played at the Kajikawa Classic (ASU) where they were run-ruled three times, once by Arizona State, at the DeMarini Classic (UNLV) and at a tournament hosted by UC-Riverside where they got their first two wins of the season. They also have a mid-week win this past Wednesday. Cortney Smith (four homers) and Kiki Pepi are the only players with an OPS over .900. Three pitchers have most of the innings, none of whom has an ERA less than 4.00 or a WHIP less that 1.50. UTEP is another team that loses the stats comparison with their opponents.
The Shockers have a record of 9-3. Laurie (four homers), Paige (three homers), Macklin (four homers) and Kelli all have an OPS greater than 1.000 with four others north of .900. Katie has an ERA of 1.41 and a WHIP of 1.08. Bailey is now at 3.30 and 1.41. HCKB said in an article earlier this week that Jenni should be back this weekend with a pitch limit of 50 per day. Needless to say, the Shocks win the stats comparison.
This appears to be a sweepable tournament, but two teams have a pitcher that has beaten a ranked team.
