  • Shocker SB at Littlewood Classic (Arizona State)

The Shockers travel to Tempe this weekend for their second tournament. Other tournament participants beyond host Arizona State are Missouri, South Dakota and Illinois State. As is typical when two teams from the same conference are at a tournament, the Shocks and the Redbirds will not play each other. The Shockers play South Dakota twice, Arizona State and Missouri for their four games. For the second week in a row, the Shocks only play four games in a tournament where all of the other teams are playing five. I suspect HCKB asked to be the "short" team both times since the Shocks only have two pitchers until March when Jenni should be available.

On Friday the Shockers play South Dakota at 1245pm (all times are CT) and Arizona State at 615pm. Saturday's games are South Dakota at 10am and Missouri at 330pm.

The Coyotes of South Dakota are members of the Summit League where they are a preseason pick for fourth of the seven teams. The opened their season with a 1-4 record with games in Long Beach and San Diego (who knows?) including losses to 8 UCLA and 22 Notre Dame. Jamie Holscher is a returning member of last year's All-Tournament team. Ally Weigand pitched about three-fourths of their innings this past weekend, and Shelby Kell with four hits was the only player with more than two hits in their five games. The Coyotes have a new head coach this year.

NR/21 Arizona State is picked eighth among the nine teams playing softball in the Pac-12. (But then five or seven teams in the conference, depending on the poll, are in the Top 25. Lots of softball players in California and Arizona.) The Sun Devils were 7-0 in the Kajikawa Classic they hosted last weekend, but they did not play any ranked teams. The primary sticks after just one weekend are Chelsea Gonzales and Marisa Stankiewicz with Dale Ryndak and Breanna Macha having the most innings. Arizona State also has a new head coach who comes from Fresno State.

17/20 Missouri are picked for ninth among the thirteen SEC teams, nine of whom are in the Top 25. They had no players named to the Preseason All-SEC Team. The Tigers are 4-1 after opening their season at a Charleston Southern tournament, it seems primarily for the opportunity to play 14 James Madison twice. They split. Strangely, there are no Stats to be found for any season. We will all learn together who the studs are. Coach Earleywine was under some scrutiny last year for his "approach," but he is back in the dugout this year.

Illinois State historically plays the most difficult pre-conference schedule in the Valley. They opened at South Florida, going 2-3 in the tournament with losses to 4 Florida, 6 Michigan and 25 South Florida. More about them when conference games get here.

James Madison had the box scores for the 2 games against Missouri. Mizzou could only muster 2 singles off their ace Megan Good in game one losing 6-0. Tiger batters struck out 10 times.

They faced the Dukes #2 & #3 in the 2nd game and won 8-4. Missouri pitchers didn't seem to dominate the Duke hitters. Not a lot of strikeouts. Just a quick observation.

Have to go to the SEC website to get their stats. Always been that way. They are very guarded for some reason (Ehren Earleywine).

My boss is a huge softball guy and one of their top softball specific donors (or so he claims) so I have a little knowledge: They are struggling badly on offense. They had one hit I believe in their win over USC Upstate and it was a solo home run. The big issue is that their best player, 3B Amanda Sanchez, was held out last weekend due to an eligibility issue. Don't think she will be back this week. The rest of their offense is very pedestrian by SEC standards. The catcher, Mack, is a good ballplayer. Their top two pitchers transferred after last season (one to Oklahoma and the other to Minnesota). They are projected near the bottom of the SEC in pitching, but did surprisingly well last weekend using the four that they have.In short they are pretty beatable right now and a shell of what they used to be in years past. My boss is heading to Wichita State for the midweek games at the end of March so I will let you know all of his thoughts on WSU.

Oklahoma is also that way about stats, but I had forgotten about Missouri - just did not remember it from the Shockers's DH with them last year.

Tournament Notes from the ASU site. That page has a Tournament Central link. It appears that the content of the TC page will change each day.

If your Internet package includes the Pac-12 Network, you should be able to watch the Shockers' game with Arizona State Friday at 615pm

              Of interest,

              Drake 0-7 11/12 Arizona
Only three hits for the Bulldogs. Arizona had six hits, but received twelve walks. They left fifteen! on base.

It will be interesting to see how the pitching lines up this weekend. Will Katie get the first game against South Dakota - the upperclassman goes first - and then Bailey pitches against the team just down the road from her house? And then they switch tomorrow? But then Bailey has a quick Friday-Saturday turnaround, from early evening on one day to the first game the next day.

Or does Katie get the starts against the "powers" of this tournament, Arizona State and Missouri, and Bailey get both starts against South Dakota.

We shall soon have an idea.

                  ASU Trnm

I think it's cool that Bailey is getting to pitch in the town where she hails from.

I lived about 5 miles S of ASU until I retired & we moved to Wichita almost 12 yrs ago. Saw a lot of ASU Football games over the year including their win over UC-Berkley to win the Pac-10 Title. Also saw WSU's last football game ever there when they lost to ASU by a score of around 7-56. WSU's win in football there in 1963, 37-17 or so is the stuff of legend with ASU fans.

I also saw WSU split a pair of baseball games at ASU about 14 yrs ago. Gene S & the ASU both got tossed, one in each game. Half the 3000 people at the 2 games wore black & yellow. I lobbied with Gene for years to play ASU in a home & home series.

Sure hope WSU softball does well in Tempe, AZ, today & tomorrow!!

Mizzou beat South Dakota 11-7 in a high scoring game. Mizzou scored 5 in the top of the 7th and USD scored 3 in the botton of the 7th. Each team had 14 hits. Mizzou had 4 home runs. USD had no homers.

That make sensed and, in fact, sounds like a wise move if HCKB did request that.

It will be interesting to see what kind of pitch counts Jenni will be on when she does return and how long it will take her to get back to normal or close to normal work loads.

Live stats show the Shocks losing to Southern Illinois 11-3. Which did happen last May.

I just got off the phone with ASU Media Relations. They are now aware of the problem and will try to get it straightened out.

And last weekend, the Coyotes could not hit their backside. The Missouri pitching issues that @LuskingforGuttin: pointed out seem evident in this game. At one point, Missouri trailed 4-3.
