  • Shocker SB at Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational

The Shockers open their 2017 season at a tournament in Houston hosted by the Cougars.

The Shocks play two games on Friday, Boston College at 9am and Wright State at 1130am. They wrap up their portion of the tournament with another two games on Saturday, UCSB at 2pm and Houston at 7pm. The other teams will each have a game on Sunday.

Boston College is a member of the ACC where they are picked sixth of eleven teams in the preseason poll. Last year, the Eagles finished 30-23 overall and 12-9 in the ACC, their best record since joining the conference for the 2006 season. Their staff returns four pitchers and had the third-best ERA in conference play. Jessica Dreswick and Allyson Frei are the mainstays in the circle. A lineup that had the highest batting average in school history returns all but two starters. Tatiana Cortez was All-ACC First Team last year and had thirteen home runs. Outfielder Annie Murphy was Second Team.

Wright State is picked second in the nine-team Horizon League, the same spot they finished last year. Horizon League First Team selections from last year are pitcher Ashley Sharp, outfielder Honnah Susor and shortstop Becka Peterson.

The Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara are a pick for sixth among the eight teams of the Big West. Kristen Clark was First Team for the All-Big West last year, and Sierra Altmeyer was Second Team and All-Freshman. Veronika Gulvin will become the primary starter this year.

Houston is slotted for fourth among the seven teams of the American Athletic Conference. Tulsa is a narrow pick for first in this league. Savannah Heebner is the only returning member of the AAC First Team. Although she had (marginally) the most innings for the Cougars last year, her accolade was earned as a DP/Utility. Elise LeBeouf and Maya Thomas are returning members of the Second Team.

The Shockers return Katie Malone in the circle and welcomes freshman lefty Bailey Klitzke to the staff. Jenni Brooks had off-season surgery and is hoping to be back by March 1. Morgan Palmer, a transfer from Seminole State as an outfielder, may eat a few innings here and there until then.

With the graduation of Cacy, Brittany and Liz, the offense may take awhile to come around. Macklin Hitz, Paige Luellen and Laurie Derrico have the highest returning OPS, all above .900.

@flyingMoose: what are you thinking would be a reasonable expectation for this weekend? I'm thinking a competititve 2-2 would be an acceptable outcome considering our pitching situation and the loss of the Big 3 on offense.

That sounds reasonable. So much of the early season depends on pitching match-ups (conceivably we will see the #1 for both Boston College and Wright State) and how quickly Bailey settles in. I would expect her to be up and down for at least the first few weekends - just a natural part of moving from travel ball to college ball.

This does not appear to be a pitching-rich tournament, except for Boston College perhaps. If the offense can let it fly, they might win all four. (There - the jinx is in. :) )

Also it is worth recalling that HCKB has picked a weaker set of tournaments (but not necessarily weak) than last year, giving her some chances to experiment, giving the team some time to grow into new roles.

Because of the weather issues in the Northeast, Boston College will not arrive in time for their originally scheduled Friday games. So the new schedule for the Shockers (with LiveStats links) is

        Fri 11am - Wright State
Fri 130pm - UC Santa Barbara

Sat 2pm - UC Santa Barbara
        Sat 7pm - Houston

I guarantee a WSU win in this one.

Shocks explode for 6 runs in the bottom of the 2nd highlighted by a 2-out 3-run double by Macklin Hitz followed by another 2-out double by Freshman catcher Madison Perrigan.

Wright State making a pitching change. Perrigan scored the 7th run of the inning on an illegal pitch.

Shocks up 7-0 after 2 innings.

The Shocks strike in the bottom of the second. Walk to Cassidy, sac bunt by Ryleigh, single by Ashley and advance to second on an error with Cassidy advancing to third, RBI single by Mackenzie, RBI single by Kelli, walk to Paige which loads the bases, a bases-clearing double by Macklin, an RBI double by Madison and Wright State changes pitchers. Madison scores on an illegal pitch before the Raiders get the last out of the inning.

Shockers lead 7-0 after two and a runs-ahead game is in play.

If Madison Perrigan wants to go really old school she could use the song Harrigan as her walk up music.

                    P-E-Double R-I-G-A-N that's me!

The Shockers get the eighth run in the third. Single by Mackenzie, double by Kelli and a wild pitch. A third Wright State pitcher made her appearance.

Bailey is on to pitch in the fourth, and Asea Webber, a transfer from Oklahoma State, replaces Paige in right field.

Katie struck out three and gave up no hits and two walks in her three innings.

The Shocks were 1-out away from a 5-inning no-hitter but a walk, an error on Macklin at 1B, a walk and a double plated two runs in the top of the 5th for Wright State.

The Shocks responded with 2 runs of their own to end the game under the run rule.

                        Wright State 2R - 1H - 1E
                        Wichita State 10R - 10H - 1E

Good start for the Shocks. Good to get Bailey a couple of innings under her belt.

Pinch-hitters in the bottom of the fourth and more Shocker subs in the top of the fifth.

Bailey gets the first two outs, but then a walk, error and walk load the bases before a two-run double by the Raiders, their first hit, moves the game to the bottom of the fifth.

But the Shockers counter with two runs of their own to close out the game. Single by Cassidy, double by Mauriana Jamele, RBI fielder's choice by Ashley and sac fly by Mackenzie.

                          Wright State 2-10 Shockers

Katie struck out three and walked two, giving up no hits, in her three innings. Bailey gave up the only hit by the Raiders, walked three and struck out two in her two innings.

Mackenzie had two hits including a double and two RBI, Kelli had two hits including a double and Macklin had three RBI with her double.

UC - Santa Barbara up next for the Shocks. The Lady Gauchos are 6-2 all-time against the Shocks and have the warm weather advantage early in the season. The last meeting in February 2014 resulted in a 2-1 win by UCSB. Glad Katie was not extended much in the Wright State game. Just a good warm-up.

Doesn't take me long to figure these things out.

Our hitting coach is now Nicole Entz, having married in late December.

                              Congratulations!!!
