The Lady Shockers opened up the 2017 Spring Season with some tough competition at the National Collegiate Tennis Championships in Rancho Mirage, California.

Shocker Juniors Giulia Guidetti and Gabriela Porubin, whom the Shocks will look to for leadership this year, and two Shocker 1st year players, Marta Belluicco and Fatima Bizhukova, made their Shocker debuts after only arriving on campus a few days prior to the Tournament.

Not a great success in terms of wins, the Shockers were 2-6 in singles matches and 2-2 in doubles matches but the competition was very strong and hopefully that will pay some dividiends down the line.

The Shockers are next in action next Thursday in a noon matchup with Missouri State. Very unusual to be playing a conference match that early in the season. The next conference match is not until March 25th.

In what seemed to me to be a very unusual bit of scheduling the Shockers played their first dual match of the season against Valley foe Missouri State. They won't play another conference match for 2 months.

In any case, the Shokcers had little difficulty with the Lady Bears sweeping the match 7-0 winning their 80th consectutive dual match against Valley opponents.

The Shocks were very strong at the top slots as Jr. Giulia Guidetti at #1, Jr. Gabriela Proubin at #2 and Sr. Tana Thonsing at #3 cruised to easy 2 set wins winning 36 of 40 games. The Shocker with 3 freshman filling the #3 through #6 slots seemed a little more vulnerable their but still won on 3 of those matchups in combining to win 36 games to 12 for the Lady Bears.

The Lady Shocks fall to TCU 4-0 in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekkend event in Stillwater.

They will play tomorrow against Cornell who lost to the host Oklahoma State.

The Lady Shocks dropped a pair of matches on Monday in Arkansas losing to Cornell 4-3 and to Arkansas 4-0.

The Shocks had beaten Cornell early in the season in Stillwater 4-1.

The Shocks are now 4-4 on the season. The Shocks appear to have taken a step back from recent seasons. With 3 Freshman among the Shocks top 6 players perhaps this was to be expeted. The Shockers played freshman in 4 of the 6 singles matches against Arkansas. Jr. Garbriela Porubin did not play in the singles agaisnt Arkansas.

While the Shocks may struggle a bit in non-conference play against a strong schedule they should still be able to continue their dominance in Valley play. Hopefully, the team will benefit and grow from the tough non-conference schedule they play and by the end of the season the Freshman will have improved as a result.

Luca Pump, who would have been a senior this year, left the team last March.

The roster is definitely on the young side of the ledger this year.

The Lady Shocks knocked off South Alabama 4-0 today at the Wichita Country Club to improve to 5-4 for the Spring.

What surprised me a bit was the match reports states the Shocks are ranked #35 which indicates they have palyed a very good schedule so far. They are indeed currently #35 in the ITA Rankings which is a set formula-based ranking. Not really sure how much that means this early in the year.

Shocks play at Nebraska on Sunday at 11:00 am.

The Lady Shocks lost a tough, hard fought down to the wire match with undefeated Nebraska today in Lincoln 4-3.

Shocks travel to Norman, Oklahoma nest Saturday to take on the Sooners as they continue to play a strong schedule.

Last Sunday the Lady Shocks picked up their best win of the season knocking off #43 SMU in Dallas.

The Lady Shocks are now 6-7 on the season and play North Texas today to try to get back to .500 against a pretty decent schedule.

The Lady Shocks did even their record at 7-7 a couple weekends ago with a 4-3 road win over North Texas.

This weekend the Shocks have two Valley road matches. They are at Southern Illinois today and at Evansville tomorrow.

The Lady Shocks knocked off SIU today by a 5-2 score to extend their winning streak over Valley opponents to 81 consecutive matches.

The Lady Shocks make it 82 in a row with a 7-0 whitewashing of Evansville today.
