  • Rangie and Keke are playing vs Loyola tonight.

Not a great start for the Shocks as they trailed 13-14 at the end of the 1st quarter. However, they pulled away in the 2nd quarter outscoring Loyola 22-6 for a 35-20 lead.

Perhaps as impressive as anyone was Shocker Fr. Kayla Williams who scored 8 points in 9 minutes of playong including 3-pointers at the end of both the 1st and 2nd quarter. Kayla made 2 of her 3-point attemtps but the rest of the team was 0-6. Otherwise the Shocks have shot the ball petty well and have taken advantage of their sized advantage inside.

    • Kayla just missed finishing off the 3rd quarter with another 3-pointer as her release was just a fraction of a second late. Shocks lead 47-29 at the end of 3 quarters.

Not exactly a scintillating 3rd quarter.

Loyola making interesting with a quick 9-0 run to open the 4th quarter agaisnt a leaky Shocker defense. Cutting the leadin in half to 47-38 with 7:23 remaining.

Shockers have not shot the ball well this half so far.

      • Shocks answer back with a 7-0 run behind 2 baskets from Rangie and a coner trey from Tamara. Should be in good shape now leading 54-36.

        Final: 65-43

Angiee Tompkins with 18 points on 9-15 shooting and 11 rebounds. Rangie 14 point on 5-10 shooting plus 5 rebounds.

        • Other Valley Scores:

UNI 57 @ Drake 70 (Drake clinches the Valley regular season championship and with wins at home against MSU and WSU next weekend would become the 1st undefeated Vallley regular season champion -- 6,456 in attendance tonight at the Knapp Center).

Bradley 71 @ Evansville 73 (this could be very helpful to the Shocks in avoiding the play-in round).

Indiana State 61 @ Missouri State 69 (Shocks and Indiana State should be a pretty competitive game on Sunday -- Shocks have a 2-game lead over the Sycamores)

Illinois State 48 @ Southern Illinois 57 (Salukis in a good position to make a run at 4th place)

All home teams hold serve tonight.

A Shocker win over Illinois State on Sunday would assure the Shockers avoid the play-in game in the Valley Tournament. They would be there now if that had not lost to Illinois State last Friday.

          • Actually in studying the standings a bit further I think the Shockers have in fact clinched a Top 6 seed in the Valley Tournament.

The worst the Shockers can do is 8-10. The best Bradley and Evansville can do is 8-10.

While they could end up tied with Bradley and/or Evansville they hold the tiebreaker over both with sweeps of both teams this year. So the Shocks are guaranteed to be seeded above Bradley, Evansville, Illinois State and Loyola.

What is remaining is to determine if they will be seeded 4th, 5th or 6th.

I believe a win over Indiana State on Sunday assures the Shocks of at least a 5 seed in the Valley Tournament with a shot at the 4 seed still in play. However, Southern Illinois does own the tiebreaker over the Shocks if they tied for 4th.

I think the only seed set in stone at his point is Drake will be the #1 seed. Although the chances of last place Loyola winning their final 3 games has to be less than miniscule.

            • The weekend article is about Jaleesa and her interest in a broadcasting career.

Sully's Sunday article talks about the search for a new coach, basically that the search is in a quiet phase.

                  67-43.

The Shocks led 23-8 after the first quarter, and Indiana State got the margin back to single digits only once. The story of the game was the Shockers shooting 39% while the Sycamores shot only 25%. Rangie had 17 and Angiee had 15.

                    • Shocks with a surprisingly easy 67-43 win over Indiana State. This win narrows the Shocks' Valley Tournament seeding possibilities to either the #4 or #5 seed depending on the outcome of the games next week. Either way the Shocks will be on #1 seed Drake's side of the bracket.

Shocks play at UNI and at Drake next weekend to finish the regular season. Odds are the Shocks will finish Valley play at 9-9. They might have a shot at upsetting UNI although UNI has played well at home this year. Drake is undefeated at home this year.

Drake is locked into the #1 seed. Illinois State is the #9 seed. Loyola is the #10 seed.

All 9 games this weekend were won by the home teams.

                        • Low scoring defensive battle in Cedar Falls. The Shocks have held UNI to 26 points in the 1st half which is plenty good. However, UNI has held the Shocks to 13 points. Part of that is UNI's outstanding defense and good game plan and part of that is ineptness by the Shocks.

The Shocks are 5-22 from the field with Sabrina 3-8 and Ta 1-1. The rest of the team is 1-13. UNI is simply smothering Rangie, Angiee and Sabrina in the paint and the Shocks simply do not have an outside threat to open things up. Rangie and Angiee are 0-8 from the field.

In Terre Haute Southern Illinois cruised to a 25 point lead at 51-26 with 14 minutes remaining in the game then held on for dear life to pick up a 70-66 win over Indiana State.

Drake is leading Missouri State 48-38 in Des Moines at the half.

                          • Final: UNI 62 - WSU 37 and it wasn't really that close. The Shocks had 28 points with about 3 minutes to go when UNI subbed in the bottom of their bench. The Shocks picked on tht group for 4 late, meaningless layups and a free throw. UNI was a poor 2-13 from three point range (they average about 8 made threes a game) but the Shocks topped that with an 0-10 effort.

                            In other Valley Games:

Drake 98 - Missouri State 91 in Des Moines.
Southern Illinois 70 - Indiana State 66 in Terre Haute
                            Evansville 81 - Loyola 50 in Chicago

The Shocks have about a zero % chance of beating Drake in Des Moines. Lest you think Drake has nothing to play for I believe they are now ranked in the Top 25 and will want to maintain that plus I believe if they beat the Shocks on Saturday they will become the first Women's team to finish a Valley regular season undefeated.

The Shocks drop to 9-8 and are in a 4th place tie with Southern Illinois. SIU plays at Loyola Saturday which is almost a sure win. So in all iiklihood SIU will finsish 4th and the Shockers 5th. if they tie for 4th SIU wins the tiebreaker and would be the 4th seed in Moline. The Shocks only chance to finish with the 4 seed is to beat Drake and hope Loyola can beat SIU. That would seem to be the longest of long shots.

                            • The Lady Shocks seem to like the up and down, suburban horse, defense optional style that Drake plays.

The Shocks, who scored a total of 37 points in there loss to UNI, lead at the end of the 1st quarter 28-27.

Not sure the Shocks can maintain that pace but Drake doesn't try to stop you they just try to outscore you.

Update: Shocks down 51-44 at the half.

Update: Neither team playing much defense in the 3rd quarter but the Shocks decision to quit guarding the 3 point line killed them as Drake rained 3's on them and has pulled out to a 83-64 lead. Drake would let the Shocks shoot uncontested layups and the Shocks let Drake shoot uncontested treys.

Final: Drake 105 - Wichita State 89. Drake hit a school record 19-31 three pointers and became the 1st Women's BB team in Valley history to produce an undefeated regular season. By comparison the Shocks were 4-17 from behind the arc.

SIU blew out Loyola 71-46 as expected so the Shocks finish alone in 5th place and will play SIU in the quarterfinals of the Valley Tournament. I don't expect the Shocks to do much. They might be able to beat SIU in this game but I think that would be about their ceiling.

With only MSU at UNI to be contested this evening the Valley Tournament seedings are set. There are and won't be any ties so just check the Valley standings to see how teams will be seeded.
