Shocker WBB 2016-17 Valley Regular Season Games

Missouri State 73 - Wichita State 62

Disappointing and a litte surprising. Can't say too much because I did not watch the game. However, the Shocks only scored 22 points in the 1st as Rangie went scoreless missing all 5 of her shot attempts.

The Shocks fell behind by 11 at 27-38 at the midway point of the 3rd quarter. The rallied back to tie the game at 47-all with 8:30 remaining in the game. At that point MSU went on a 12-0 run over the next 3 minutes and the game was essentially over at that point. Rangie Bessard scored her 1st basket of the game with 5 minutes remaining and added a couple more but it was far too little, far too late.

Rangie and Taquandra were both scored 7 points on 3-9 shooting and each had 5 turnovers. Taquandr also fouled out.

Not sure what if anything MSU did to take Rangie out of the game but the Shocks will struggle with that kind of production from her and Taquandra.

I have to admit I can't get a very good take on this team.

It's way early but the Shocks are now sitting in last place in the Valley standings.

MSU ran a gap defense and manned Rangie and pushed her off the block where she took ill-advised 18-20 footers. Rangie and Mike were both very frustrated. Valley teams know each other very well and scout very well, so the Shocks have to execute with precision. I believe the Shocks have the horses to compete. Not sure why they folded.

Watched the replay today. The other thing I noticed is that MSU had a big sized advantage at the guard position. The Shocks particularly had trouble matching up with 5-10 Lisa Fruendt and the 6-1 Fr. Alexa Willard. Several times the Shocks found themselves with the 5-2 Aundra Stovall matched up with the 6-1 Willard who would immediately post her up.

The Shocks were beaten in pretty much every facet of the game. Defense, Offense, Rebounding, Inside, Outside, Intensity, BBIQ, Coaching.

MSU probably played one of their better games of the season. However, if they can continue that level of play they belong right with Drake and UNI at the top of the league.

The Shocks should do okay against the rest of the Valley but who knows for sure.

The Lady Shocks are at SIU tonight at 6:00 pm CT and play at Evansville on Sunday at 1:00 pm CT as they hope to break a 4-game losing streak.

Shocker Game Notes

The Shocks are coming off a poor performance last Friday in Springfield in a 62-73 loss to Missouri State after actually having played reasonably well in home losses to Drake and UNI the previous weekend. The Shocks have had a full week off, which may or may not be a good thing, to work on things in practice.

Both of these games are winnable. Whether they actually win either on of them remains to be seen. SIU is 6-8 overall in D-1 games and 1-3 in the Valley. They won against Loyola and lost to Drake, UNI and Indiana State. Evansville is also 6-8 overall in D-1 games and 2-2 in Valley play with wins over Indiana State and Loyola and losses to Drake and UNI.

The one thing they have in common with SIU and Evansville is that they have all lost to Drake and UNI. The Shocks played Drake and UNI much closeer than SIU and Evansville did but that was also true of Missouri State and that certainly had no predictive power in that game.

Drake and UNI both should easily move to 6-0 as the trade off games against Bradley and Illinois State.

Shocks trail SIU 27-35 at the half after trailing 18-19 at the end of the 1st quarter. Looks like the Valley book on this year's Shocker team is out and has been well-read. Clog up the middle as much as possible focusing on taking away Rangie and Angiee/Sabrina and dare the Shocks undersized guards to beat them. Generally, the Shockers will not win a perimeter shooting contest.

MSU and SIU both have had a big size (and skill) advantage at the guard position. Last Friday it was MSU's 5-10 Lisa Freundt and 6-1 Alexa Willard taking advantage of the Shocks' small guards. This week SIU starts 5-11 Carlie Corrigan and 6-1 Kylie Giebelhausen agaisnt the Shocks 5-5 Keke Thompson and 5-9 Taquandra Mike. Even Rishonda Napier at 5-5 had an advantage over the 5-2 Aundra Stovall.

Maybe Jody can make some adjustments that will work but the Shocks looked totally discombobulated in the 2nd quarter.

Some adjustments were made but to no avail. Final: Southern Illinois 77 - 54 Wichita State

I think the final score was fairly reflective of the difference between the two teams tonight. Shocks turned the ball over 16 times to 8 for SIU and gave the Salukis' best outside shooters way too many open looks. Kylie Giebelhausen was 7-10 from the arc and added 1 free throw for 22 points and Rishonda Napier was 5-8 from the arc 18 points while Kim Nebo worked the paint for 16 points. SIU 13-24 fron the 3-point line thanks to 12 of 18 for Giebelhausen and Napier. The Shocks were 4-15.

Taquandra Mike led the Shocks with 14 points and Rangie added 12 points and 10 rebounds but Rangie has been very frustrated the past 2 games.

So the Shocks opened up with the 4 teams picked to finish ahead of them in the preseason voting and pretty much have shown that to be pretty accurate. At this point it is hard to see them as anything better than a 5th place team at best.

Northern Iowa 50-11 Illinois State (Yes, up by 39 at the half) - Final: UNI 78-40
Missouri State 43-21 Evansville - Final: MSU 77-41
Drake 44 - 30 Bradley - Final: 93-60

Maybe the Shockers will be the most competitive loser tonight. Final: Yes that was the case.

Update: Travel partners Indiana State and Loyola played their only game of the weekend Saturday in Chicago. Indiana State 48 - 38. Indiana State is now 4-1 in Valley play but have been feeding on the weak sisters although they do own a good road win over SIU. I am not yet convinced the Sycamores are for real.

In 3 of the 5 games so far this weekend we have teams score 38, 40 and 41 point and one winning team that scored 48.

The Shocks have played the 4 best teams to open league play and have proven they were not up to that task. Can they be the best of the rest? Today's game at Evansville should provide some preliminary evidence of that one way or the other.

Halftime: Shocks 40 - 33 Purple Aces

Jody going with a plattoon system. 5 players play 5 minutes then a 5-in, 5-out. Even called a timeout in the 2nd Quarter to make the line change.

Shocks playing a 1-2-2 zone the entire 1st half with mixed success. Not a great defensive effort. Evansvile only has 2 players you need to be concerned about. They have done a decent job on Sarah Dickey but 5-5 Camary Williams has 14 points.

That is stating it very kindly. It was a horrible 3rd quarter. Pathetic really. Evansvile 19-4 in quarter to take a 52-44 lead.

And Evansville is not really a very good team.

Shocks get their 1st conference win 74-67.

However, color me less than impressed especially with the Shocks defense. Also not sold on Jody's platoon system but maybe I need to give it time. I don't think Rangie looked particularly happy with it.

Evansville followed the book on the Shocks and packed the paint. Shocks an okay 7-21 from three but also won the points in the paint 24-14 and also shot 37 free throws (16 in the final 1:32 as Evansville continually tried to extend the game).

Rangie is obviously frustrated. Open at the post, but doesn't get a pass. This has gone on for all of Jody's coaching career. I don't get it. I still think the Shox have the players to compete. Hard to watch, but I watch.

And beyond brutal to listen to. The (student, I think) color commentator, analyst, whatever they call them nowadays, was clueless. When HCJA subbed all five, "They do this all the time." She has probably never done this before in her life. Must have picked it up from Mitch Fiegel.

And the guy couldn't shut up. The play-by-play fellow could barely get in a word edgewise. May as well have turned off the sound and just watched.
