  • Shocker SB at Nebraska

The Shockers journey to Lincoln this weekend to play three games over Saturday and Sunday against the Huskers. The first game of two on Saturday starts at 1pm with the Sunday game also starting at 1pm.

Nebraska, a perenially strong program who have played in the NCAA Tournament all but two years of the last twenty-one, have moved into the polls at 23/RV. The Big 10 (consisting of 12 schools) does not do the preseason thing like most conferences, but Michigan and Minnesota from the conference are also ranked. The Huskers current record is 10-3. As you would expect, they play a pretty strong pre-conference schedule. They have a win over 7 Oregon and losses to 1 Florida and 9 Washington. At the UNI Dome Classic, they beat Northern Iowa 7-4 in extras, scoring three in the seventh to get to the eighth, and run-ruled Drake.

Their offense is led by MJ Knighten with an OPS of 1.543 and eight home runs, Kiki Stokes with an OPS of 1.199 and Alicia Armstrong with an OPS of 1.185 and four home runs. Knighten and Stokes were first-team all-Big 10 members last year. Three pitchers have almost equally shared the innings. Cassie McClure has an ERA of 1.63 and WHIP of 0.93, Emily Lockman, ERA of 3.03 and WHIP of 1.33, and Kaylan Jablonski, ERA of 4.04 and WHIP of 1.58. Lockman was a second-team all-Big 10 selection last year.

The Shockers now have a record of 8-6, playing a schedule of some consequence. PaigeL is the only starter with an OPS greater than 1 at 1.132. Kelli leads the team in hitting at .391, but all but one of her eighteen hits are singles. Macklin has an OPS of 1.102 with about half of the plate appearances of the full-time starters.

Katie, who has most of the innings and half the starts in the circle, has an ERA of 3.92 and a WHIP of 1.43. Jenni, with the best W-L record at 4-1, has an ERA of 3.04 and a WHIP of 1.58. Kelsey (3.77 and 1.54) and Ashlynne (5.44 and 1.78) round out the staff.

I wonder if the coaching staff is regretting not picking up Sydnee Eck? Seems like we could use her.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Creighton’s Sydnee Eck was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week and St. John’s Krystal Puga got the nod for BIG EAST Player of the Week the conference announced Monday.

I never thought it was from lack of trying - but I don't know the details of the saga.

        Game One

Katie has the start with much the same lineup we saw last weekend - Kelli at short, Liz at second and Macklin as the DP. Laurie Anne has a sprained ankle which caused her to miss last weekend. When she is healed, we may see if freshman offensive woes are truly her roadblock as was suggested last week.

In the top of the first, the Shocks scored two. After Kelli was hit by a pitch and advanced on a ground ball, Brittany doubled her home. A single by PaigeL scored Brittany. The Huskers got one back in their half of the first with a single, sac bunt, passed ball and single.

The Shockers stretched their lead to 4-1 with single runs in the second and third. In the second, Macklin walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on MackenzieW's single. PaigeL led off the third with a single and advanced on a sac bunt where Liz doubled her home.

Nebraska got one back in the fourth on a homer and tied the game in the fifth on a single and homer. 4-4 after five complete innings.

In the Husker seventh, the first two hitters were a single and a walk-off home run.

        Shockers 4-6 Nebraska

The Shockers had five hits, none after the third inning. PaigeL had two hits, Brittany and Liz had doubles. Katie gave up eleven hits and one walk, striking out two. All six runs she gave up were earned.

          Game Two

Jenni has the start in this game. The lineup is the same with a bit of shuffling of the batting order.

The Shockers scored first in the top of the fourth. PaigeL doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. From there, she scored on a single by Liz. In the Husker fourth with runners at the corners and one out, the Shocks got a second-to-short-to-first double play to end the inning.

Through five, Jenni has only given up four hits and two walks. In addition to the fourth inning threat, Nebraska did load the bases with two outs in the first, but a ground out ended the inning.

PaigeL led off the sixth with a homer. The Huskers got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a single, double and fielder's choice ground out. With one out and a runner still at third, Jenni got a comebacker and a fly out to end the inning.

In the Husker seventh, an error put a runner on with two outs, but Jenni got a ground out to end the game.

          Shockers 2-1 Nebraska

Jenni gave up just the one run on six hits and two walks to get the win and bring her record to 5-1. The Shockers got eights hits - two by PaigeL, including a double and a homer, and another double by Brittany.

Pretty solid play by the Shocks against a Top 25 team.

Very nice work by Jenni in the circle in Game 2.

I just saw a Sports Center #3 from the Shocker win vs. Cornhuskers. It was a diving stop by our 3rd baseman who threw out the runner at 1st base (totally across the diamond)by throwing it from her knees to preserve the 2-1 win. Congrats Ladies

                  Game Three

Ashlynne got the start in this game. Macklin is the DP with the same lineup as the last several games.

The Shocks put up two runs in the top of the first. Kelli walked, moved up on a sac bunt and scored on a single by Brittany. PaigeL reached on an error, and Cacy scored Brittany on a single, the run being unearned.

Ashlynne only last four batters. A hit batter, single, run-scoring single and walk brought on Katie. She gave up a two-run single and double that drove in a run before getting out of the inning. The Huskers led 4-2 after one inning.

Katie have up a two-run homer in the second to extend the Nebraska lead to 6-2.

The Shocks got back in the game in the top of the third. Three walks loaded the bases with a fielder's choice out mixed in. A single by Macklin, a wild pitch and a ground out by Cassidy each scored a run. In the bottom half of the inning, a home run and a double given up by Katie brought Jenni on in relief. A single scored the second run of the inning for the Huskers. The lead 8-5 after three innings.

Nebraska added two more runs with a homer in the fifth and a run-scoring double in the sixth. The Shocks only managed two base runners, a walk and a hit batter, over the last four innings.

                  Shockers 5-10 Nebraska

Jenni, allowing two runs over her 3.1 innings, was the most effective of the three pitchers for the Shocks. On the weekend, Katie gave up five homers.

The Shocks managed four singles by four different hitters in today's game.
