  • Shocker SB v Evansville

This weekend the Shockers close out the home portion of their conference schedule against Evansville (although they will host the conference tournament).

The Purple Aces have an overall record of 10-39 and are 2-18 in the Valley and in last place.

The big bopper for Evansville is Danielle Freeman with twelve HR and an OPS of 1.150. Chandra Parr has an OPS of 1.005 with eight HR. The team OPS is .745.

While the offense for the Purple Aces seems capable, the pitching does not. The opponents' OPS is .951! Most of the innings belong to Amanda Blankenship with an ERA of 6.07 and a WHIP of 1.91. Cecilia Dopart (6.54 and 1.80) and Samantha Fleming (6.34 and 2.38) have virtually all of the rest of the innings.

The Shockers are 11-10 in the Valley and in a tie for sixth place with Indiana State. Brittany continues to pace the offense with an OPS of 1.238 and nine HR. Cacy (.953 and eight HR), Mackenzie (.929) and Liz (.894) round out the rest of the usual culprits. The team OPS for the Shocks is .834 with an opponents' OPS of .820.

Although Katie did not get the start in the rubber game with Missouri State and was the third pitcher in the game for the Shockers, she was perfect in her five innings. Her ERA is now 3.53 with a WHIP of 1.44. The numbers for Jenni are 3.87 and 1.74 and for Kelsey are 6.00 and 1.55.

Although not yet posted on the Shocker web site, I assume there will be Senior Day activities sometime during the weekend.

Other conference series this weekend are Drake at Bradley, Southern Illinois at Indiana State, Loyola at Illinois State and Northern Iowa at Missouri State.

So your saying if you like a lot of scoring this weekend might be entertaining.

I think the Shocks need for Jenni and Kelsey to shake off their poor outings in the circle against Missouri State and be able to give the Shocks some decent innings.

I assume Katie will back to the #1 spot in the rotation and will get 2 starts this weekend.

Shocks have 4 seniors on the roster. Melaine Jaegers, Erin Carney, Layne Greenlee and Brianne Bond.

Melanie is going to play a lot for sure. Hopefully, Erin, Layne and Brianne will get a nice dollop of playing time as well. Hopefully, Evansville will cooperate like they pretty much have all year.

Anyone else having problems hearing @VOTS: calling the game? I assume it must be equipment problems. Either my iPhone or the equipment at the game. BTW, I think he does a tremendous job. I enjoy listening to him doing pbp for the basketball and softball games.

Whatever the problem was it appears to have been resolved because I can hear fine now.

                  Game One

                  Evansville 2-6 Shockers

Shockers eased to a 6-2 win.

Evansville started Blankenship who was fine for two innings. Then they went to Fleming (second time through the lineup? the starter was nicked up somehow?) who was not nearly as effective. The Shocks bunched together some hits, walks and sloppy play by the Purple Aces (only four of the six runs had an RBI behind them) to score three in each of the third and fourth innings. Brittany had two of the Shockers' seven hits. Cacy and Liz both had a double. The hitters had some plate discipline issues. The two strikeouts in the first inning were on pitches above their heads, and their were other instances of swinging at really bad pitches scattered through the game.

Katie had spells where she could not stay ahead of the hitters, but she only gave up five hits, a walk and two hit-batters along with three strikeouts. Her season record is now 17-9.

                    Game Two

Jenni has the start in this one. Cacy is sitting with Macklin at first and Kennedy Long from Derby as the DP. McKenzie continues to be the starter in right.

Jenni with a very solid 5-inning effort in Game 2.

Shocks put it way with 6 runs on 8 hits (including a solo homer and a 2-run homer) and 1 Evansville error without Evansville recording an out in the bottom of the 5th.

Not much help from our Valley friends yesterday. SIU and ISU were rained out so they will play a double header today and lose 1 game.

Still early but the day not starting well when you're trying to move up the standings.

Shocks not helping their own cause either, trailing 2-0 into the bottom of the 4th.

However in the bottom of the 4th the Shocks have put together a couple of hits and several Evansville miscues and have tied it at 2 with the chance to do a lot more damage with a runner at 2nd and still nobody out.
