  • Womens Golf - MVC Championship

Shocks have the early lead, just barely, midway through the first round at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Bumflip, IA for reasons I can't possible explain.

Why in the hell are we having a golf tournament in the middle of nowhere, when enough of our school are located in the middle of nowhere?

Do we really need to get even LESS attention??

It's raining there...not sure if play has stopped or not, but assuming it has as scores have stopped it seems. Will check in later.

Taryn Torgerson is the 1st player to post a score and it's a solid start for her. +1.

Meghan Schuetz struggled late (I think?) and posted a +8 80 and should be the throw away score.

Not so much as Maria Alejandra Villa also struggles down the stretch and cards a +8 80. Shocks now in 2nd.

Bryce Schroeder finishes with a +4 76 and the Shocks have 1 golfer on the course, and she leads the tournament.

Allejandra Arellano bogeys the last and finishes even 72 for the day. Shocks are +13 and lead Loyola in the clubhouse who's +16.

Southern Illinois and Missouri State are still out and could surpass WSU at the end of round 1.

SIU finishes 1 stroke behind WSU at +14.

Favorite Missouri State finishes 9 back of WSU at +22 and in 5th place overall.

OK. I looked up Spirit Hollow Golf Course. It's located midway between the 2 Iowa schools and 3 of the Illinois. Of course, WSU and MSU are the 2 farthest away. It is said to be the #2 golf course in Iowa. It has a bar and grill called Lambo's so it can't be that bad.

For the record Missouri State was picked to win the championship, with WSU 2nd and SIU and Loyola way back.

MSU is led by a couple of talented FR that may struggle in their 1st conference tournament championship......just a guess.

Midway through Round 2 the Shocks are up by 14 shots on Loyola and 15 shots on SIU. They are up by 20 shots on pre-championship favorite Missouri State but the Lady Bears are about 5 holes further into their round than are the top 3 teams. I would expect the lead over MSU to narrow some by the end of the day. Appears to be a very challenging course.

Now the top for teams have all had their scores updated through 14 holes of Round 2.

The Shocks lead Missouri State by 15, SIU by 26 and Loyola by 26.

Now the Shocks just need to maintain over the final 4 holes.

After 14 WSU is still in the lead with Missouri State now in second.

WSU scored a +13 through 14 while MSU scored a +19 on those same 14 holes.

                    The through 14 scores are

                    WSU +26
MSU +41 (MSU completed the round at +47)
                    SIU/LIU +52

WSU should end round 2 with a sizable lead.

Alejandra Arellano leads the field with a +1
Maria Alejandra Villalobos is in 3rd with a +7
Bryce Schroeder is in 5th with a +10
Taryn Torgerson is in 8th with a +11
Meghan Schuetz is in 23rd with a +15

Shocks finish at +36 so they lost 4 shots of their lead over Missouri State over the final 4 holes. An 11 shot lead is nice but certainly not insurmountable on this course. The Shocks did pick up 2 strokes on the Lady Bears for the day.

Loyola is 21 shots back and SIU 22 shots back of the Shockers.

Alejandra Arellano, the Shocks lone senior, shot a 2-over 74 today to go with her even par 72 from Round 1 and she leads the medalist list by 5 strokes at 146.

BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Wichita State women's golf team is in first place after the second round of the Missouri Valley Conference championship. The Shockers shot a 311 in the second round and a 301 in the first round at the par-72 Spirit Hollow Golf Course.

With all of WSU and MSU players through four holes, both are +3, keeping WSU up 11 strokes over the Bears.

The Shocks have maintained their lead at +11 with 3 players each scoring completed through 9 holes but the other 2 players only have 4 holes scored.

However, MSU's throw away score is 9-over and WSU's worst score is 5-over so if someone else on each team stumbles badly the Shocks have a little advantage there.

The front 9 is now in the books for all 5 golfers for both WSU and MSU. The Shocks have extended their lead to +18.

Alejandra Arellano has extended her lead in the medalist standings to 8 strokes.

Not yet ready to put it in the ol' deep freeze but the Shocks are sitting pretty and just need to keep doing what they are doing.

BTW, the Shocks lead over 3rd place SIU is now 34 shots.
